Sizzling Second-Half Shooting Results in 89-69 Bentley Win

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sizzling second-half shooting that included 13 of 19 from beyond the arc powered the Bentley University Falcons to an 89-69 win over The College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon on the Dana Center's Barbara Stevens Court.

Senior guard Aaron Latham (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) led the Falcons with 20 points, four assists and four steals, and graduate guard Kellan Bochenek (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont HS) was five-for-five from three in the second half. He finished with 18 points, all via the long ball.

With the win, Bentley stayed unbeaten at home (7-0) and improved to 9-5 overall (4-3 NE10). Saint Rose dropped to 5-8 overall and 2-5 conference.

As hot as the Falcons were in the second half, they struggled offensively throughout the first 20 minutes. They shot only 24 percent in the half, made only 5 of 23 from three and yet, had a 30-28 lead at the break. Seven offensive rebounds and only three turns, seven less than Saint Rose, were key to offsetting the shooting woes.

Nine of the game's 11 lead changes and all five ties came during the opening half.

After a three from freshman guard Dante Weise (Allentown, N.J.) opened the second half scoring and gave the Golden Knights their final lead of the game, Bentley embarked on a 16-0 run that was fueled by the three.

Bochenek and Aaron launched the run with both hitting twice from deep, senior forward Ivan Misic (Toronto, Ont.) made a spinning lay-up and senior guard Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) sank a pair of free throws. That 16-0 explosion took 3:40 and resulted in a 46-30 Falcon lead.

A 14-4 spurt broke it open, giving the Falcons a 65-39 advantage with 8:38 to play. That surge bookended by threes, sophomore forward Joe Carroll (Cedar Grove, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) to start and Bochenek from the left wing to finish.

By the time coach Jay Lawson emptied his bench with about four minutes left, Bentley had led by as many as 31.

Latham (4 of 9 from three and Bochenek (6 of 10) were followed in the scoring column by Laput, who finished with 15 points and five assists. Sophomore guard Cash McClure (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook HS) followed with 12 points and six rebounds, and Carroll led the non-starters with seven points.

Saint Rose's top scorer was freshman guard Trey Boyd III (Durham, N.C.), with 14 points off the bench.

Overall, Bentley had a slim edge in field goal percentage, 43-41 percent, and doubled up Saint Rose from three, making 18 to the Golden Knights' nine. The Falcons turned it over only eight times and had the rebound advantage, 41-35.

Bentley's next game is Wednesday at conference-leading St. Michael's.
