Quartet Combine for 83 as Bentley Shoots Past Bridgeport, 102-83

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore guard Cash McClure (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook HS), part of a quartet who combined for 83 points, finished with a career-high 24 as Bentley University stayed unbeaten at home with a 103-82 win over the University of Bridgeport in non-conference men's basketball Tuesday night on the Dana Center's Barbara Stevens Court.

McClure, whose previous best was 15, was followed in the scoring column by senior guard Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS). The 2023 NABC Division II All-America scored 22 points and distributed a career-best nine assists.

Graduate guard Kellan Bochenek (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont HS) stayed hot from deep as he made five of eight triples for 19 points and senior guard Aaron Latham (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) added 18.

Bentley, which finished the 2023 portion of its schedule at 7-5, led 55-41 at the half after starting strong and finishing the same way. Coach Jay Lawson's team scored the game's first nine points, five of those coming from Laput on a three-ball and a fastbreak lay-up. The early advantage grew to 11 a little more than four minutes into the contest when Latham's triple made it 18-7.

Bentley closed the half with a 16-3 burst that included eight points from Bochenek and five from Laput. Bochenek, in his last three games, has drained 16 of 24 from downtown.

After the Purple Knights (5-6) scored the first six of the second half, Bentley countered with an 11-2 run to go up 17, 66-49. Laput had seven of the 11 and Latham the other four.

A few minutes later, five different Falcons scored during a 12-3 run that made it 82-57 just past the midpoint of the second half.

Bentley had its best field goal percentage of the season, .588, and sank 14 of 29 from three-point land. In the Falcons' last two home games, they've topped the century mark both times and have made 37 of 74 three-pointers.

McClure's 9-for-12 included four of six from three. Bochenek finished seven of ten overall and both Laput and Latham were 8 of 14.

Latham was a team-best +30 and McClure followed with a +24. Laput was a +22 and Bochenek finished +19.

Bridgeport also shot well (.500 overall) but was nearly doubled on the boards, 42-22.  McClure and sophomore forward Chase Clarke (Bloomfield, N.J./Newark Academy) each had seven, and all 12 Falcons to play claimed at least one rebound.

Senior guard Joshua Denis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led Bridgeport with 20 points off the bench.

Bentley's next game is Jan. 3 at home against Assumption University.
