AIC Takes Down Bentley in OT, 72-66

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – After yielding only 35 points in the first 32 minutes, the Bentley University Falcons were outscored 37-14 over the final 13, including overtime, and dropped a 72-66 decision to American International College, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Tuesday night at Butova Gym.

Junior wing Justice Ellison (Windsor, Conn.) led the Yellow Jacket charge as he scored 14 points in a span of four minutes. He buried AIC's first three-pointer of the night with 6:19 left in regulation and added three more, the fourth giving the Yellow Jackets a 57-56 lead with 2:35 to play.

A three-pointer from the right wing by Bentley sophomore guard Cash McClure (Readville, Maine/Maranacook HS) put Bentley back in front with 1:43 remaining, 60-59. AIC made a free throw to tie the game and took the lead on a mid-range jumper by Ellison with 24 seconds on the clock.

Bentley evened the game at 62 on a layup by senior guard Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) with :06 to play. Ellison was off the mark on a three and the game was headed to overtime.

In the extra session, AIC (3-2, 1-1 NE10) scored the first six points. Bentley got on the board with a lay-up from senior forward Ivan Misic (Toronto, Ont.) with 90 seconds to play and drew within two on a second-chance basket by Laput with 36 seconds on the clock. Four Yellow Jacket free throws down the stretch secured the victory.

Graduate guard Kellan Bochenek (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont HS) had his best scoring night as a collegian for Bentley. He scored the game's first nine points, all via the three-ball, and finished with 19 points. Laput led the Falcons with 23 despite an off-shooting night and McClure finished with 15.

Ellison, the NE10's leading scorer, powered AIC with 20 points and senior forward Tyrae Washington (Waldorf, Md.) followed with 14.

Bentley, which shot a season-low .333 overall, had the rebound advantage, 50-41, but turned the ball over 13 times. That contrasted to only three for the home team, which outscored the Falcons 16-2 in points off turns and 38-20 in the paint.

Bentley, 3-2 overall and 1-1 NE10, will be back at home Sunday for a non-conference game against Staten Island. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 pm.
