No. 11 Bentley Shoots Down Le Moyne, 86-61; Laput Scores Career-High 28

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior guard Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) scored a career-high 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting and three teammates joined him in doubles as Bentley University, the 11th-ranked team in Division II, earned an 86-61 win over Le Moyne College in Northeast-10  Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon on Ted Grant Court,

Bouncing back from just their second loss of the season, the Falcons improved to 15-2 overall and 10-2 conference, remaining in a three-way tie for first with New Haven and Saint Anselm. They led by at least 15 for the final 32-plus minutes and by at least 25 over the final 13:40.

The Falcons broke the game open with an early 22-4 explosion that made it 24-7 only eight minutes into the contest. Eleven points during the run were scored by graduate guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS), who buried three triples and scored a second-chance basket.

All five Bentley starters scored during that fast start, a stretch in which the visiting Falcons made 10 of 13 shots.

Coach Jay Lawson's team extended the advantage to 23, 35-12, and took a 45-27 lead into the halftime break. Over the first 20 minutes, the Falcons outshot the Dolphins 66-30 percent and tripled them up in the paint, 24-8. Laput (16) and Webb (13) combined for 29 points on 12 of 19 shooting.

Bentley remained firmly in control in the second half and used a 21-8 burst to make it a 79-44 game midway through. Laput scored seven during the run with a three-pointer, a drive and a couple free throws.

Laput, who drew ten fouls, surpassed his previous scoring high (set in the opener against Goldey-Beacom) by one and just missed a double-double, finishing with nine points. Webb followed with 15 on 6-of-10 shooting and Matt Leritz (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS), 6-of-9 from the floor, added 14 with seven rebounds and four assists.

Bentley also received 11 points and four assists from junior guard Aaron Latham (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS), a career-high 14 rebounds from graduate guard Brian Wright-Kinsey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooks School), and nine points off the bench from senior guard Kellen Bochenek (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont HS), matching his career-high.

The top scorer for Le Moyne (9-11, 6-6 NE10), was freshman Trent Mosquera (Brookline, Mass.), who hit four threes in 15:03 off the bench for 12 points.

Overall, Bentley shot 58 percent, including 9 of 20 from deep, and limited the Dolphins to .306, lowest of the season by a Falcon opponent. The Falcons dominated the boards (46-29) and had a 40-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Bentley will be back in the Dana Center Wednesday to take on NE10 tri-leader Saint Anselm, one of only two teams to defeat the Falcons this season.
