New Haven Shocks Bentley at the Buzzer After Overcoming 27-Point Deficit

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore guard Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J.) scored on a driving lay-up to beat the final horn and give the University of New Haven a shocking 60-59 victory over 11th-ranked Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Wednesday night at the Dana Center.

Bentley, which had won 12 straight this season and 22 in a row in the Dana, led 37-12 at the half and was up 27 after netting the first bucket of the second. However, with the Charger zone affecting the Falcon offense, New Haven outscored the Falcons 48-20 the rest of the way, including 10-0 over the final 1:45, to claim the win.

The stunning outcome dropped Bentley (14-2, 9-2 NE10) from sole possession of first in the Northeast-10 to a three-way tie with Saint Anselm and New Haven (12-4, 9-2).

After seeing New Haven cut the Falcon lead from 28 to two, Bentley went back up nine with an 11-4 run that made it 59-50 with 2:06 to play. The surge featured three triples from graduate guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS) in a span of 65 seconds and also included a lay-up from freshman guard Cash McClure (Readville, Maine/Maranacook HS).

New Haven came back with two triples by sophomore guard Justin Hendrick (Valley Stream, N.J.) and a dunk by seven-one senior Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) to draw within one with 7.7 seconds left. Twice during that comeback, Bentley junior guard Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) went to the line for a one-and-one, with 16.9 and 7.1 on the clock, and each time, the 85 percent foul shooter missed the first, giving Lane the chance for his last second heroics.

The first half was just all Bentley as the home team scored the game's first nine points, used a 13-0 spurt to go up 26-7 and finished the half with another run, this time 11 unanswered. The Falcons shot 48 percent in the half, made six of 13 three-pointers, were a plus-15 in rebounds and limited the Chargers to 16 percent shooting.

The second half was a totally different story as Bentley shot only 31 percent against the zone, made only four of 16 three-pointers and was outrebounded by six. Meanwhile, New Haven's 58 percent shooting included nine of 21 from downtown.

Webb and Lane were the game's top scorers, each with 21 points. Webb also had six rebounds and Lane has six assists.

The only other double-figure scorer for Bentley was graduate guard Brian Wright-Kinsey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooks School), who put up an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. Laput followed with nine points, eight rebounds and five assists, and the Falcons also received nine points and eight boards from graduate forward Matt Leritz (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS).

In addition to Lane's 21, New Haven received 14 off the bench from Hendrick and 11 from junior forward Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.).

The next game for Bentley is Saturday when the Falcons play at Le Moyne College (3 pm).
