Region’s Top Two Scorers in Action Sunday when Bentley Hosts Jefferson

WALTHAM, Mass. – The top two scorers in the NCAA Division II East Region will be on display Sunday afternoon at the Dana Center when the Bentley University Falcons host the Jefferson University Rams in men's non-conference basketball action. Tip-off is set for 1 pm and the game will be streamed over the NE10 NOW Digital Network (www.NE10NOW.tv).

Bentley junior guard Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) had been leading the scoring race but was overtaken on Saturday when Jefferson sophomore guard Eric Timko scored 31 in an 88-83 loss at Saint Anselm College.

Timko's big effort against the Hawks, which included 11 of 11 at the foul line, boosted his average to 22.6 points, along with 4.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

A 55 percent shooter overall and 44 percent from three-point range, Laput produces 21.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game. He's scored at least 20 in seven of nine games with a high of 27 against Goldey-Beacom in the opener.

Following a postponement after the Falcons traveled to the University of Bridgeport Friday night, Bentley is 8-1 overall with a number 18 ranking in the NABC Division II coaches poll and a six-game winning streak. Coach Jay Lawson's team leads the region in numerous categories, including scoring (89.4), scoring margin (16.9) and field goal percentage (.501).

Jefferson, which for the first time in more than half a century isn't coached by Hall of Famer Herb Magee, is 6-4 overall and 4-4 away from home. The Rams had won three in a row before dropping the close game to Saint Anselm.

Bentley's starting five, all of whom score at least 11 points a game, combine for over 70 points a game and each also has at least 20 assists this season.

Among them is graduate forward Matt Leritz (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS). He averages 14.2 points and leads the Northeast-10 in rebounds (9.8) and three-point accuracy (.579). The Falcons also have the conference's top foul shooter in graduate guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS), who has made 23 of 24 from the line.

Jefferson, which scores 75.3 a game and gives up 74.2, received 22 points, on 11 of 18 shooting, at Saint Anselm from six-nine junior Antonin Kemkeng. He's the team's number two scorer, averaging 11.5 points on 56 percent shooting, and leading rebounder (8.7).

Bentley is 4-2 all-time against Jefferson with the last meeting between the two coming four years ago, an 86-70 Falcon homecourt victory.

This will be the penultimate home athletic event for Bentley this calendar year. The year-ender will be New Year's Eve day with Lawson's Falcons hosting Franklin Pierce at 2 pm.
