No. 17 Bentley Visits Assumption Wednesday, A Win Away from Clinching NE10 Division Title

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University men's basketball team, which has its best 20-game record since 2010, can secure the Northeast-10 Conference Northeast-10 regular season title Wednesday when it takes on Assumption University at Laska Gym in Worcester. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.

The webcast for this game will be available at the following site: https://www.youtube.com/c/AssumptionUniversityAthletics/featured.

Coach Jay Lawson's team, which moved from 21st to 17th in this week's NABC Division II coaches poll, is 12-3 in conference play as the schedule hits its final seven days. With three games left, the 17-3 Falcons lead both Franklin Pierce and Saint Anselm, the other two teams remaining on the slate, by three games.

Bentley will take on an Assumption team that is sixth in the division, with records of 6-11 NE10 and 10-11 overall. The Greyhounds are 3-7 in their last ten games, with five of the losses by five points or less.

The Falcons are coming off an 87-68 win over Southern New Hampshire Saturday, a game in which graduate guard Colton Lawrence (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO HS) scored 32 points and senior guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS) had a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Lawrence, this week's NE10 Player of the Week, has moved into sixth in the conference in scoring, averaging 18.5 in 12 games. He leads the NE10 in three-point accuracy, connecting at a .507 clip, and is third in threes per game (.507).

In addition to the conference leader in three-point percentage, Bentley currently has the NE10 leaders in field goal percentage and free throw shooting. Graduate forward Pete Blust (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale HS) owns a .623 field goal percentage and Webb is 41 of 44 from the line, a .932 success rate. Webb averages 15.1 points and Blust (6.9 PPG) has the third most blocks with 40.

Bentley's starting five also includes sophomore guard Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) and graduate guard Jordan Mello-Klein (Sharon/Thayer Academy), who produce 15.5 and 14.6 points per game, respectively. Mello-Klein remains in the top three in the NE10 in steals, assists and rebounds.

Lawson's club continues to lead the conference in a variety of categories, including scoring, rebounding and all three shooting categories.

Assumption features graduate guard Matthew Kelly, who had a career-best 36 points against Bentley in February 2018. Closing in on 1600 career points, he is averaging 16.2 points this season and has made 55 threes with an accuracy mark of .404 from deep.

The other double-figure scorers for the Greyhounds are six-eight forward Omar El Sheikh and junior guard Isiah Gaiter. El Shiekh (12.4 PPG, 11.4 RPG) is one of only two players in the conference averaging a double-double and Gaiter (12.3 PPG) is coming off a 25-point game against Stonehill.

When the two teams met back in December in Waltham, Bentley prevailed 93-87 in a game that saw Webb and graduate forward Adrian Amabilino Perez (Barcelona, Spain) combine for 44 points on 72 percent shooting. Webb had a season-best 25 as he made 9 of 13 overall and Amabilino came off the bench for 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting.

Bentley will finish the road portion of the schedule Sunday at Franklin Pierce (the game was shifted from Saturday) before facing Saint Anselm at home Tuesday in the regular season finale.
