Webb’s Three Gives No. 25 Bentley Come-From-Behind 80-78 Win over New Haven; Mello-Klein Hits 1,000

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS) buried a three from the top of the key with 43 seconds left and graduate guard Jordan Mello-Klein (Sharon/Thayer Academy) became the 55th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark as Bentley University came from behind to edge the University of New Haven, 80-78, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Tuesday night at the Dana Center.

Bentley, ranked 25th in this week's NABC Division II coaches poll, improved to a conference-best 10-2 overall and 5-2 NE10. New Haven, which led by as many as 18 points in the first half, dropped to 8-5, including 4-4 conference.

Coach Jay Lawson's team, down 78-75, drew within one on a lay-up from sophomore guard Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) with 2:22 to play.

After the Chargers came up empty on their next two possessions, Webb delivered with his three-ball proving to be the final points of the night.

New Haven had three shots, including a buzzer-beating three-point attempt from the left corner, and two offensive rebounds in the final 27 seconds. Senior guard Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J.), who had made two of his previous attempts from deep, missed the final three.

It was a rough start for the Falcons as they fell behind 32-14 after 12 minutes. The comeback began with a 12-2 spurt reducing the deficit to eight. All the points came from downtown with Laput connecting once and junior guard Isaac Martin (Peachtree Gardens, Ga./Norcross HS) hitting three, one from the right corner, one from the left side and one from the top of the key.

Bentley, which got within four a couple times early in the second half before falling back behind by ten, closed to within one, 64-63, with 8:34 to play. That came on Mello-Klein's milestone basket, a three-ball from the right wing.

A little more than a minute later, graduate guard Colton Lawrence (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO HS) sank a triple from near the same spot to give Bentley its first lead, 66-64. Lawrence, playing in his first game in seven weeks, led his team in scoring and finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds in only 21:32. He made seven of ten overall, with a trio of treys.

The lead changed hands three more times before Webb's game-winner. Webb only attempted six shots in the game, making four, and finished with 11 points.

Also scoring in doubles were Laput with 17, Martin with 12 and Mello-Klein with 12. Mello-Klein had a tough shooting night but also collected ten rebounds and seven assists.

New Haven also had five score in doubles with senior guard Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y.) topping the list with 15 points.

Bentley shot 54 percent in the second half and finished the game at 47 percent. The Falcons had the rebound edge, 37-33, and scored 24 second chance points.

Bentley will look to make it five straight wins when it hosts Pace University Saturday at 3 pm.
