Bentley’s 4-Game Winning Streak Halted by Franklin Pierce; Game-Ending Block the Clincher

WALTHAM, Mass. - - After Bentley University came back from 13 down, a game-ending block by Franklin Pierce University junior guard Isaiah Moore (Temple Hills, Md.) preserved an 87-86 Raven victory in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Sunday afternoon at the Dana Center.

Bentley, following its first home loss of the season, left the court 6-2 overall and 3-2 conference. Franklin Pierce improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 NE10 on the strength of its third consecutive victory.

Moore, in addition to the game-ending block, scored a game-high 27 points and also had eight rebounds and seven assists.

Bentley's top scorers were senior guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS) and sophomore guard Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) with 22 and 21 points, respectively.

The Falcons took their first second-half lead, 81-79, with 2:55 to play. A second-chance basket from senior guard Brian Wright-Kinsey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooks School) with 4:14 remaining made it a one-point game and a successful three-point play by Laput put Bentley up two.

Franklin Pierce more than countered Bentley's 5-0 run with eight in a run, including three-pointers from freshman forward Sean Trumper (Ashford, United Kingdom) and Moore, the latter his fourth of the afternoon.

A second chance three-point play by Laput with 48.2 seconds left and a driving lay-up by graduate guard Jordan Mello-Klein (Sharon/Thayer Academy) with 6.6 to play brought the Falcons to within one. Mello-Klein drew an offensive foul on Moore less than a second later, giving the Falcons a final chance.

Mello-Klein launched a three as the clock was ticking down and Moore redeemed himself with his second rejection of the game.

Bentley, which had the lead for most of the first ten minutes, fell behind when FPU ran off 12 unanswered to make it 29-20 with about seven minutes left in the opening half.

It was 43-34 Ravens at the break following a first-half in which the Falcons made only three of 15 from downtown and saw Franklin Pierce turn seven Bentley turnovers into nine points.

Both Laput (21 points, 14 rebounds) and Mello-Klein (17 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists), posted double-doubles for Bentley, and Webb scored in doubles in each half. Off the bench, junior guard Isaac Martin (Peachtree Corners, Ga./Norcross HS) sank three triples for nine points.

In addition to 27 from Moore, Franklin Pierce received 21 points from freshman Mohamed Traore (Hyde Park).

Franklin Pierce outshot Bentley, 50-46 percent, and was more efficient from deep (12 of 26 as compared to 11 of 31). The Falcons had the rebounding advantage (42-33) and scored 20 second-chance points.

Bentley's next two games are on the road, Saturday at Post University and next Monday at American International College.
