Five Score in Doubles as 5-1 Bentley Shoots Past Bridgeport, 111-72

WALTHAM, Mass. – Graduate guard Jordan Mello-Klein (Sharon/Thayer Academy) came within one rebound of his second career triple-double and sophomore guards Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./ Notre Dame HS) and Aaron Latham (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) each set career scoring bests as a shorthanded Bentley University team shot past the University of Bridgeport, 111-72, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center.

Mello-Klein, before exiting the game for good with nearly six minutes to play, amassed 21 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds. Laput, 8 of 10 from the field with two treys, matched Mello-Klein's point total and Latham scored 18 in his first career start.

Bentley, which scored its most points since November 2017, also received a career-best 18 off the bench from junior guard Isaac Martin (Peachtree Gardens, Ga./Norcross HS) as it improved to 5-1 overall, despite being without four rotation players, including two starters.

The Falcons buried 17 of 35 from downtown, including five triples in the first five-plus minutes to open a 17-8 lead. That included two from Latham and one apiece from Mello-Klein, senior guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS) and Laput.

After falling behind, Bentley ran off eight unanswered, including three-balls from Latham and Mello-Klein. The run grew to 27-11 and the lead to 14, 54-40, with a minute-and-a-half remaining in the first half.

Following intermission, coach Jay Lawson's team used runs of 9-0 to go up 78-52 and 28-6 to make it a 106-64 game. Martin was the top scorer during a 55-point second half, scoring 13 points in 15 minutes.

Webb was Bentley's fifth double-figure scorer as amassed 15 along with eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Graduate forward Pete Blust (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale HS) also had a strong game with nine points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

Bentley shot 54 percent overall, 49 percent from three and dominated the boards, 52-30. The Falcons were credited with 35 assists on 41 baskets. Bridgeport was 0-for-9 from three in the second half and shot 41 percent overall for the game.

Bentley will return to Northeast-10 action Tuesday when it plays at Southern New Hampshire.
