Adelphi Knocks Bentley Out of 1st with 77-75 Win; Hudson Scores Career-High 30 for Falcons

WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite a career-high 30 points from senior forward Chris Hudson (Hodgdon, Maine/Williston Northampton School), the Bentley University Falcons were edged by the Adelphi University Panthers, 77-75, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center.

Bentley, which trailed by as many as 14 in the second half, had a chance at the end but junior guard Jordan Mello-Klein (Sharon/Thayer Academy) couldn't get his potential game-tying driving lay-up to fall at the buzzer.

The loss knocked Bentley out of first place in the NE10 Northeast Division and ended the team's 11-game home winning streak. The Falcons, now a game back of Stonehill in the standings, dropped to 16-6 overall and 8-5 conference.

Down 61-48 with midway through the second half, Bentley came storming back, tying the game at 64 with 4:42 to play following a 16-3 run. Twelve of those points belonged to Hudson with five lay-ups and a couple free throws.

Adelphi pushed the differential back to six, 72-66, with an 8-2 spurt that featured a pair of three-pointers from six-seven junior Spencer Foley.

Bentley came back to make it a one-possession game three times in the final 100 seconds, including on a driving lay-up by senior guard Seth Stankiewicz (Reading, Pa./Reading HS) with eight seconds left.

Following a foul, a missed free throw by junior guard Jared Rivers (Westbury, N.Y.) and a rebound from sophomore guard Brian Wright-Kinsey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooks School), Mello-Klein drove the court but was unable to finish, allowing the Panthers (15-7, 8-5 NE10) to survive.

A poor shooting first half for Bentley ended with the Falcons on the short end of a 38-30 count. Bentley cut an eight-point deficit to two, 29-27, before the Panthers used an identical 8-3 spurt over the final four minutes to take a 38-30 into the break,

Adelphi opened the second half with a Foley three and went on to open a 59-45 lead with 12 minutes to play.

Hudson, who scored 24 of his 30 in the first half, made 10 of 17 shots from the floor and 10 of his 12 free throws. He also collected eight rebounds, made two blocks and was credited with three assists.

Bentley also received 12 points off the bench from Stankiewicz, 11 from sophomore guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS) and ten from Wright-Kinsey.

Sophomore guard Ronnie Silva (Nashua, N.H.) led Adelphi with 26 points, six assists and five rebounds, and the Panthers also received 16 points from Foley, who buried four of his six three-pointers.

Bentley rebounded from the poor shooting first half to connect at a 63 percent clip in the second, but was still outshot for the game, 51-47 percent. The Falcons also had the advantage in rebounds (35-28), points off turnovers (22-14) and points in the paint (38-26).

The Falcons finished with one more basket and two more free throws, but saw the Panthers make twice as many three-pointers, 12-6.

Bentley will be on the road Wednesday, taking on the division leader, Stonehill College, at 7:30 pm.
