New Haven Hands No. 14/17 Bentley 3rd Loss of Season, 72-42

Runs of 11-0 and 16-0 helped the University of New Haven hand nationally-ranked Bentley University just its third loss of the season, 72-42, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Tuesday night at the Charger Gymnasium.

New Haven, 6-8 overall and 4-4 NE10, knocked down a dozen three-pointers while holding the Falcons to season lows in points, field goal percentage (.269), rebounds (27) and assists (6). Bentley went into the game averaging 83.6 points and shooting 51 percent.

Bentley, which was ranked 14th in Division by the NABC and listed 17th in the D2SIDA media poll this week, saw its winning streak halted at seven and dropped to 14-3 overall, including 6-2 Northeast-10.

Freshman forward Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and junior guard Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y.) led New Haven their shooting from deep, combining to make 9 of 14. Thomas (15 points) was five of eight, including four in the first eight minutes of the second as Bentley was trying to overcome a 33-19 halftime deficit. Rowland sank four of six and finished with a game-high 18 points and six assists.

Senior forward Chris Hudson (Hodgdon, Maine/Williston Northampton School) led Bentley with 15 points and four rebounds.

Points were at a premium for both teams during the first 12 minutes with the Chargers building a slight lead, 17-14. With the Falcons enduring a scoreless stretch that approached six minutes, New Haven took charge, scoring 11 unanswered to double the Falcons, 28-14. Five different players scored, including Thomas who knocked down his first three-ball.

The closest Bentley came in the second half was 14 points, 43-29 with 14:15 left, when a three from sophomore guard Brian Wright-Kinsey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooks School) and a Hudson basket produced the Falcons' first run of the night.

The Chargers countered with 16 straight, beginning with threes from Rowland and Thomas and including eight in a row from senior forward Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J.). That made it a 30-point game, 59-29 with 8:49 left. At that juncture, the Falcons had misfired on 32 of 43 shots, only a game after shooting 64 percent in a win over Southern Connecticut.

Also scoring in doubles for New Haven were Felizor, with 12, and senior guard Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y.), with 14.

For Bentley, Hudson was followed by Wright-Kinsey and sophomore guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS), with 10 and 7, respectively.

While the Falcons were making only about a quarter of its shots, New Haven shot 52-percent overall and 44 percent from three. The Chargers also had the rebound advantage, 37-27, and were a plus-14 in the paint, 26-12.

Bentley will look to get back on track Saturday when it plays a 1:30 game at Pace University.
