Gilpin 3 Gives Bentley 83-81 OT Win over Adelphi

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University junior forward Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) buried a three-pointer from the right corner with 4.7 seconds left in overtime to give the Falcons their second extra-session win of the month, 83-81 over Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Wednesday night at the Dana Center.

The Falcons' 13th three-pointer of the night, and Gilpin's third in as many attempts, boosted Bentley to 10-7 overall and 7-5 Northeast-10 with Coach Jay Lawson's squad gaining ground on two of the three teams ahead of them in the conference's Northeast Division standings. Adelphi dropped to 6-13 overall and 2-9 NE10.

Junior guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thomson Collegiate) led Bentley with 27 points, his fifth straight game with at least 25, and seven assists. Sophomore guard Seth Stankiewicz (Reading, Pa./Hill School) followed with 18 points and both Gilpin and sophomore forward Chris Hudson (Hodgdon, Maine/Northampton Williston School) added 15.

Second-half comebacks have been a trend for Bentley in recent games and that was again the case against the Panthers with the Falcons down 69-64 with 5:20 to play.

Gilpin nailed a three from the left corner to make it a two-point game with 5:13 left and Stankiewicz connected from about the same spot with 3:13 remaining, cutting the Adelphi lead to a single point, 71-70.

After Adelphi went inside to senior forward Terrel Martin-Garcia (Calford, England) for two and a 73-70 lead, Richmond buried the game-tying three, from right of center with 1:36 left.

That proved to be the final basket of regulation with Bentley receiving a couple key rebounds from senior forward Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) and Richmond blocking a potential game-winning three to end the second half.

Stankiewicz opened the overtime scoring with a three from the right corner, but the next six points went up on the Adelphi side of the scoreboard for a 79-76 Panther lead with 2:41 to play.

Richmond brought the Falcons within one with a long two from the right wing with 2:22 left, and after two Adelphi free throws, Hudson again made it a one-point game on a reverse lay-up with 1:20 left. Gilpin's game-winner came after Stankiewicz rebounded a missed three by the Panthers with 25 seconds left.

Richmond, who has scored 98 points in his last three games against Adelphi, finished 11 of 19 overall, including four of nine from deep. Stankiewicz buried four of six threes en route to his 18, and both Gilpin and Hudson provided five assists. Wheeler only scored three but pitched in with eight boards, four steals and three assists.

Junior guard Tavon Ginyard (Brentwood, N.Y.) and Martin-Garcia came off the bench to lead Adelphi with 20 and 18 points respectively with Martin-Garcia adding ten rebounds and five assists.

The Panthers matched Bentley's 13 three-pointers but weren't quite as efficient, needing 39 shots. The Falcons shot .481 from outside the arc and .471 percent overall, slightly better than the visitors' .453.

Rebounds favored Adelphi, 40-34, but Bentley took better care of the ball, finishing with 14 turns (AU had 20) and a dozen steals.

Bentley will be back in action Saturday with a 3:30 home game against Southern Connecticut State.
