Bentley Hosts Saint Anselm Saturday, Looking to Get Back on Track

WALTHAM, Mass. – After having been denied a four-game winning streak for the second time this season, the Bentley University men's basketball team will be back in the Dana Center Saturday afternoon for a Northeast-10 Conference encounter with Saint Anselm College. Tip-off is slated for 3:30 pm with a free webcast available at www.bentleyfalcons.tv.

The 2017-18 Falcons are off to a 6-2 start, including a 4-1 record in conference action. They'll be taking on a Saint Anselm College team that improved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 NE10 with a 90-75 win over St. Michael's Tuesday.

Coach Jay Lawson's team opened the season with three straight wins before falling at Jefferson University five days before Thanksgiving. After bouncing back with another string of three in a row, all against conference opponents, they fell to undefeated and nationally-ranked Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday, 89-80.

The two losses marked the only times this season that Bentley has shot less than .500 from the floor, as well as the only two occasions where the opponents have posted a higher field goal percentage. Against SNHU, the Falcons were outshot 49-47 percent while matching their season-high for turnovers (13).

Junior guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thomson Collegiate), an uncharacteristic 5-of-20 from the floor in Wednesday's game, remains one of four 20-point-per-game scorers in the NE10. He's averaging 21 points overall and 23.6 in conference games.

Junior forward Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) had his second 20-point game of the season the other day, hitting four three-pointers while finishing with 20 points and eight boards. He's second to Richmond on Bentley's season-scoring list at 13 a game.

Sophomore guard Seth Stankiewicz (Reading, Pa./Reading HS) and freshman guard Jordan Mello-Klein (Sharon/Thayer Academy) are the other Bentley players scoring in doubles. Stankiewicz, whose .614 three-point percentage is second nationally in Division II, has come off the bench to score 11.1 a game and Mello-Klein has averaged 10.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists in his first eight collegiate games.

Senior forward Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) is coming off a season-best 13 points and is the team leader in rebounds (6.9), steals (11) and blocks (6).

Saint Anselm, which opened the season with two games at the Dana Center during the Bentley Tip-Off Classic, features junior guard Tim Guers, whose 23.9 scoring norm ranks second in the NE10. He also averages seven rebounds and nearly six assists a game.

This will be the third straight game the Falcons will face one of the NE10's elite scorers, Guers following SNHU's Chris Walters and St. Michael's Levi Holmes III. Walters erupted for 34 on Wednesday and Holmes III was limited to a season-low 15.

Cody Ball, also a junior guard, combines to give veteran coach Keith Dickson a prolific 1-2 scoring punch. He's shooting 51 percent from deep and averaging 17 a game.

Bentley continues to lead the NE10 in scoring at 90.3 and Saint Anselm will come into the Dana ranking third at 84.2. They are also 1-2 in assists with the Hawks running away with the NE10 lead (21.4) and the Falcons at 16.6.

Next up for the Falcons is Merrimack on the road Tuesday, the Falcons' final conference game until 2018.
