GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Six-foot-ten junior Manny  Suarez (Cliffside Park, N.Y.), scored 30 points, including a tying three-pointer late in regulation and a go-ahead triple in the extra session, to lead Adelphi University to an 88-82 overtime win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Wednesday night at the Center for Recreation and Sport.

Adelphi , with the W, improved to 13-4 overall and 6-3 in the conference. Bentley , which had won two in a row, slipped to 6-8 (3-6 NE10) despite 26 points  and six rebounds from sophomore guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thomson Collegiate).

Down by five late in the second, Bentley ran off six unanswered to take a 72-71 lead. Richmond sank two from the line with 3:48 left, junior forward Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) scored on a drive nearly two minutes later, and Richmond hit two more free throws with 1:19 to return the lead to his team, 72-71.

Following two missed shots by the Panthers, Wheeler was fouled and converted both from the stripe, making it a three-point advantage with 24.9 seconds. Suarez answered with a long three from the right wing with 14.1 on the clock, knotting it at 74. Following a missed jumper by Richmond, Bentley headed to OT for the second straight contest.

Bentley struck first in OT, a baseline jumper by sophomore forward Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) with 3:35 on the clock. Suarez answered with his triple igniting a ten-point run that also included a three-ball from sophomore Jack Laffey (Middletown, N.J.).

After falling behind by eight, two Richmond three-point plays, the first with 35.1 seconds and the second with 26.2, brought Bentley within three, 85-82.  However, junior guard Michael Coffey secured the win for the Panthers by making three of four from the line in the final 22 seconds.

Bentley led 31-30 with 6:22 left in the first half after a corner three from freshman forward Chris Hudson (Hodgdon, Maine/Williston Northampton School). The next seven-plus minutes belonged to Adelphi, which strung together a 15-4 run to go up ten, 45-35, early in the second.

The Falcons countered with a 10-3 spurt, including three baskets by Gilpin, to pull back within three at 48-45. The run grew to 25-15 with a Richmond lay-up evening the score at 60 apiece midway through the half.

Bentley's first lead of the second half came on a half-hook by Wheeler with 5:35 left, but it was short-lived as the Panthers ran off the next six, making it 71-66 with four minutes left.

Richmond was one of four Falcons to score in doubles. Wheeler scored 18 and came within one rebound of a double-double, Gilpin finished with 17 and senior guard Matt Barr (Stratham, N.H./Cushing Academy) scored 12 while hitting three of the team's four three-pointers.

Suarez finished 13 of 19 from the floor, including four of seven from deep, and also had 11 rebounds.  Laffey also had a big night with six three-pointers and 20 markers.

Adelphi had the shooting edge, 44-42 percent, and knocked down a dozen three-pointers while launching the ball 36 times from downtown. Turnovers were even at 11, Bentley had one more rebound (48-47) and Bentley spent more time at the line. The Falcons were 12 of 18 and the Panthers were 10 of 13.

Bentley will embark on a three-game homestand Saturday at 3:30 pm against American International.
