Hyland Erupts for 34 against Brother’s Team as Bentley Improves to 11-1 in NE-10 Action

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – With his younger brother Tanner playing for the other team, Bentley University graduate student and Academic All-America Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) buried seven of 10 three-pointers and finished with a career-high 34 points as the Falcons took care of Le Moyne College, 84-58, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

Keegan finished 12 of 17 overall and also collected eight rebounds while helping the Falcons to their fifth straight win. Bentley, 10-1 since the start of December, improved to 14-3 overall and 11-1 NE-10, good for a one-game lead over Saint Anselm in the conference's Northeast Division.

Tanner, who like his brother wears the number 13, didn't enjoy the same kind of shooting success in the first-ever collegiate match-up between the two. The sophomore finished with eight points but misfired on eight of 11 shots.

An early 7-0 spurt, capped off by the first of Keegan's triples, staked the visiting Falcons to a 9-3 advantage and the lead was never given back.

A four-point game with nine minutes to play before the break, Bentley dominated the remainder of the first half, outscoring the Dolphins 28-8 to take an impressive 43-22 lead into the locker room. The 21-point halftime lead was a season-best for the Falcons and the 22 points allowed, on 26.7 percent shooting, marked the team's best defensive first-half performance.

The 28-8 drilling began with 12 unanswered points by Bentley, including three-pointers from sophomore forward Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) and senior guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS).

There was also a run of eight straight, the first five scored by senior All-Conference forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS). Bentley's number three scorer of all-time put up his third straight double-double, finishing with 19 points, ten rebounds and three blocks.

Keegan opened the second half with a three and the Falcons remained firmly in control throughout the remainder of the game. An 8-0 run, including two Keegan triples, made it 63-39 with 13:30 to play, and the Bentley lead peaked at 28 with 5:09 left following another 8-0 burst.

Freshman guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thompson Collegiate) was the third Bentley player to score in doubles as he came off the bench for ten. Wheeler finished with nine points and eight rebounds, and Furness also scored nine.

Senior guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) led Le Moyne (6-11, 4-8 NE-10) with 12 points.

Bentley outshot the home team 49-37 percent with the Dolphins' the fourth straight team to be held under .400 by the Falcons. Coach Jay Lawson's team also knocked down five more threes (12-7), hit five more free throws (12-7), collected 13 more rebounds (42-29) and committed only nine turnovers, one less than Le Moyne. The Falcons' 15 assists included five by junior guard Matt Barr (Stratham, N.H./ Cushing Academy).

Bentley will play its final two cross-division games at home, beginning Wednesday night against Saint Rose.
