9-3 Bentley Looks to Bounce Back at New Haven

WALTHAM, Mass. – Following a rough final 11 minutes against Stonehill a week ago that resulted in an end to a five-game winning streak, the Bentley University men's basketball team will be back in action Saturday for a 1:30 pm Northeast-10 Conference encounter at the University of New Haven. Links to the webcast from Charger Gym will be available at www.bentleyfalcons.com.

The 87-75 loss to Stonehill in a game the Falcons led by 10 with 11 minutes left dropped Bentley to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the Northeast-10. They trail Northeast Division leading Saint Anselm by a half-game.

New Haven, coming off an 83-81 last season loss to Merrimack on Wednesday, is 4-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play following an injury-plagued first-half of the season. Leading scorers Jemal Mosley and Michael Bourke have combined to missed eight games, including two that they were both out.

Bentley, which will be on the road for four of its next five, hasn't played very much of late with Saturday's contest just the team's third in the last four weeks. The Falcons had 17 days off after winning at St. Michael's Dec. 12, played twice in four days surrounding New Year's and had a mid-week bye this past week.

Coach Jay Lawson's team has shot .515 so far, including .405 from three, with the field goal percentage ranking fifth best in Division II. Each of his five starters have an effective field goal percentage over .580, including senior guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) who is at .723.

The six-foot-six Furness, owner of a 15.8 scoring average, scores nearly 16 a game while shooting 56 percent overall, 51 percent from three with 38 triples in 12 contests, and 89.5 percent from the line. He's one of only six Division II players nationally to shoot at least 50 percent while making three or more from deep each game, and also has only 11 turnovers in 384 minutes.

Ahead of Furness on the Bentley scoring list are graduate guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and senior forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS). Hyland, who averages 16.8 points and is 37 shy of 1,000, erupted for 29 points, on 12-of-16 shooting, against Stonehill, including 22 in the first half.

McFarland, 14 points away from taking over fourth place on Bentley's all-time scoring list (now held by Tim Forbes '06, 1,731), scored only eight against Stonehill but still leads the NE-10 with a 23.2 average.

Junior guard Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S./Hun School (N.J.)) is the other Falcon who has started every game, and sophomore forward Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) has gotten the call in the last six contests. Duke averages 9.3 points and 3.3 assists, and Wheeler, owner of a .610 field goal percentage, has provided nearly eight rebounds a game since moving into the starting unit.

Mosley, who has 51 points in his last 2 games, and Bourke combine for 37 points a game for New Haven, which will be looking to end a four-game slide (all decided by six or less). Mosley,  junior, shoots 46 percent from downtown while averaging 19.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and three assists. Bourke, a red-shirt freshman guard, follows at 17.5 with a team-high 28 three-balls in ten games.

Sophomore guard Levy Gillespie is a scoring threat off the bench for the Chargers with an average of 12.5 points.

Following the trip to Connecticut, Bentley will prepare for a Wednesday evening home game with Adelphi University.
