Bentley Seeks 9th Win in 11 Games Wednesday at Adelphi

WALTHAM, Mass. – After having its winning streak halted at six by a very good Southern Connecticut State team on Saturday, the Bentley University men's basketball team will make a second attempt at win number ten on Tuesday when the Falcons are at Adelphi University.

Game time at the Center of Recreation and Sport in Garden City, N.Y. is 7:30 pm.

The loss to Southern left the Falcons (9-6, 4-5 NE-10) in sixth place in an NE-10 Northeast Division where five teams qualify for the conference championship tournament. The congested standings have only two games separating the top six teams with Bentley trailing both Stonehill and St. Michael's by one game and three others, including first-place Southern New Hampshire, by two in the loss column.

Before being cooled off by the Owls, Bentley had won eight of nine overall and had been a perfect 7-0 when six-foot-six junior point guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) was available for the full game.

Bentley's offense, one of three in the NE-10 putting up at least 80 a game, features junior forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) and senior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS). They are the only pair of NE-10 teammates who are both scoring at least 19 a game with McFarland at 19.5 and Hyland a half-point behind him.

McFarland leads the NE-10 in blocks with 36 and also has the conference's second-best three-point percentage at .493. Hyland's 6.1 rebound average is second on the team, trailing only McFarland's 7.3, and he has a team-high 57 assists.

The above three are usually joined in coach Jay Lawson's starting five by senior guard JP Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA) and junior forward Shaq Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden HS). Koury is tenth in the NE-10 in steals (27) and his 10.3 scoring average is third best on the team. Phelps, over his last 10 games, has shot 58 percent overall while contributing 8.3 points and 4.3 rebounds a game.

Senior forward Andrew Shaw (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) has averaged 11 points off the bench over the last eight, shooting 60 percent overall and 52 percent from three since being inserted into that role.

Adelphi has lost five in a row, the last two by an average of 20.5 points, to fall to 4-10 overall and 1-7 NE-10. The Panthers are among the NE-10's best in steals (7.3) and getting to the line (over 20 times a game) but are 13th in opponents' field goal percentage (.463) and rebound margin (-2.7). During the current losing streak, Adelphi has been outshot 51-40 percent.

Senior forward Duane Morgan leads the Panthers in scoring (14.3) and his 7.9 rebound average is second to junior Ryan DeNicola's 8.2. Guard Michael Coffey is having a productive freshman season, averaging 13.1 with a .402 accuracy mark from deep, and junior guard Anthony Libroia is also in doubles, scoring 12.4 a game.

After the trip to Long Island, Bentley will play its next two at home, hosting 10-3 American International Saturday and 10-5 New Haven next Wednesday.
