Bentley Faces Major Test on Sunday after Winning 3 of Last 4

WALTHAM, Mass. – Since Thanksgiving, the Bentley University men's basketball team has averaged 94 points while winning three of four games.

The Northeast-10 Conference's third-most prolific offense will be put to the test on Sunday when the Falcons host Le Moyne College at 3 pm. The Dolphins will come into the Dana Center sporting an unblemished conference record (4-0), the East Region's best overall record (8-1) and the second stingiest defense nationally in Division II (56.8 points per game).

It's the second straight game that Bentley will be facing a one-loss team. On Tuesday, the Falcons traveled to Long Island for a non-conference encounter with Molloy College and returned with a 99-92 victory in a game they led for the final 39 minutes.

Senior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS), with 28 points and nine rebounds, and junior forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS), with 25 and 11, combined for 53 points and 20 boards to power the Falcons at Molloy. It was the fourth time this season the two have combined for 40 points or more.

Hyland and McFarland are currently one of only two sets of teammates in the East Region who are both averaging at least 19 points. Hyland is up to 19.6 after totaling 54 during the Falcons' two-game road trip, and McFarland, is right behind him at 19.4.

The two are also 1-2 on the team in rebounds, assists and three-pointers. McFarland, the number two shot blocker in the NE-10 (2.1 a game), also averages 7.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists. Hyland's norms are 6.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists, and he's drained 21 three-pointers, two more than McFarland.

The Falcons, 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the NE-10, received a lift with the return from injury of junior guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) on Tuesday. After not playing for over three weeks, he provided 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals in 26 minutes against the Lions.

Another reason the Falcons shot a season-best .603 at Molloy was junior forward Shaq Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden HS), who was seven of eight for 16 points. He's raised his season norm to 9.0 after averaging 13 over the last four.

While Bentley is putting up over 82 a game for the season, Le Moyne has yielded more than 63 just twice during its fast start to the season. The Dolphins are second in the NE-10 in field goal percentage (.492, including .532 inside the arc) and have limited their opponents to a sensational .353, including .293 from deep. Only Bloomfield, .478 in the season opener, has shot as high as 40 percent against the Dolphin zone.

Very few teams rely as much on the starting five as coach Steve Evans' team with the Le Moyne starters having accounted for 95 percent of the scoring and 82 percent of the rebounds.

Dolphin senior guard Naté Gause has to be in the NE-10 Player of the Year discussion as he leads the conference in scoring (22.1) and is also third in steals (21) and fourth in both rebounds (8.7) and three-pointers (24).

Junior guard Qwadere Lovell has also had an excellent first third of the season as he is averaging 17.4 points and 5.1 assists.  Senior forward Ryan Romich (8.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg) owns the NE-10's third-best field goal percentage at .642.

Next weekend, the Falcons will be on the road for games at Caldwell University Friday night and the University of New Haven Sunday afternoon.
