Bentley Opens Northeast-10 Slate Wednesday at Assumption

WALTHAM, Mass. – Following an up-and-down opening weekend in its own Tip-Off Classic, the Bentley University men's basketball team will open its Northeast-10 Conference schedule Wednesday night when the Falcons play at Assumption College. Tip-off at Laska Gym is 7:30 pm with links to free live video at www.bentleyfalcons.com.

Both teams will enter the game with 1-1 records. Bentley dropped a 68-67 decision to Holy Family University Saturday, a game it led by seven with a little more than a minute left, and rallied from 13 down to upend preseason number 14 Philadelphia on Friday, 72-63.

Assumption went the opposite way during the opening weekend, bouncing back from a 75-68 Friday loss to Caldwell to beat Domincan College 77-63 Saturday.

Bentley's top scorers during the opening weekend were senior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and junior forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS).

Hyland, picking up where he left off last year (18.8 ppg during his final five games), averaged 23 points, eight rebounds, three assists and 2.5 steals. Included was a 31-point, 11-rebound double-double against Holy Family, a game in which he set career bests in both those categories and hit a go-ahead jumper with about six seconds left.

McFarland, a second-team All-Conference performer a year ago, provided 15 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks a game with a high of 18 points against Philadelphia.

Senior guard JP Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA) was also productive during the weekend, filling the stat sheet with 13.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, three assists and three steals a game. He got to the line 16 times during the two games, knocking down 14.

Assumption had five players average in double figures in its first two games, including six-foot-six junior Tre Owens. He had 16 in the Dominican win, hitting four of five from downtown, after not playing the previous night.

Junior forward Karl Ziegler provided 14 a game on 58 percent shooting and both six-foot-eight senior Jimmy Zenevitch and sophomore guard Kamali Bey also had the hot hand. Zenevitch (13.5 ppg) made 12 of 19 shots and Bey (12.0) was 10 of 15 from the floor.

This week's schedule also has the Falcons hosting Stonehill College on Saturday afternoon (3:30 pm).
