Bentley Heads to Stonehill Saturday in Search of 3rd Straight Win

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University men's basketball team will be looking to continue its late-season success Saturday when it visits Stonehill College in search of a third consecutive win. Tip-off at Merkert Gymnasium is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

The Falcons are coming off back-to-back wins over Southern New Hampshire and Franklin Pierce University, with the latter knocking the nationally-ranked Ravens out of a first-place tie in the Northeast-10 Conference.

Stonehill has dropped a season-high three straight to slip to 11-13 overall and 7-13 in the NE-10. Most of the team's success has come on its home court, where the Skyhawks are 9-5, as compared to 2-8 on the road, including a seven-point loss at Bentley back on Dec. 8.

In the Franklin Pierce win, junior guard Jasper Grassa (Lynn/Lynn Classical HS) scored a career-high 30, including a long three to beat the shot-clock buzzer and break a 55-all tie with 51.5 seconds left after the Ravens had gained all the momentum with a quick 8-0 burst.

Grassa has had a strong second half, averaging 18.5 points over the last 12 games while shooting 45 percent overall, 43 percent from three and 87 percent at the line. He's leading the NE-10 in three-pointers for the second straight year after hitting six triples in each of the last three games, and has averaged 25.3 points during that stretch.

Freshman forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) had his eighth double-double of the season at Franklin Pierce, matching the most by a Bentley player since Brian Tracey had 11 in 2009-10. He's averaged 18 points and 10.3 rebounds over the last four games, with 19 offensive boards during that stretch.

Overall, Grassa's scoring norm is up to a season-best 15.5, and McFarland will take averages of 14.4 points and 8.1 rebounds in Saturday's game.

Sophomore guard J.P. Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA) has scored in doubles in five of six February games, averaging 10.8 points and 5.4 rebounds over that stretch. He's also had at least one steal in 13 of his last 14 games, with his 43 total steals tied for fifth most in the NE-10.

Stonehill has four seniors, three of whom are starters, who'll be playing at home for the final time Saturday. That list is headed by guard Brian Hamor, the team's top scorer with a 10.8 average. Six-foot-six guard Adam Fazzini has buried 50 threes en route to 10.4 points per game, and Sam Markle, also a guard, has a team-best 83 assists. The fourth senior, six-foot-seven, Raheem May-Thompson, is fourth on the squad in scoring at 9.3.

Six-foot-eight forward Jack Cole has had a productive sophomore season as he leads the team in rebounds (8.8), blocks (35) and field goal percentage (.595) while scoring 10.5 a game.

In the earlier meeting between the two programs that have won five of the last seven regional titles (Bentley in 2007, 2008 and 2010, and Stonehill in 2006 and 2012), McFarland scored 22 points, including the first four of a game-ending 8-0 run, as the Falcons pulled out the win. A 42-27 rebound dominance and an 18-5 advantage in free throws helped Bentley overcome one of its highest turnover counts of the season, 19.

Bentley (9-15, 7-13 NE-10) will close out the regular season Tuesday at home with the 50th and final meeting with Division I-bound UMass-Lowell.
