Grassa, McFarland Team for 38 as Bentley Bests Southern New Hampshire, 69-46

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior guard Jasper Grassa (Lynn/Lynn Classical HS) buried six three-pointers during a 20-point afternoon and freshman forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/ Camden Hills HS) followed with 18 as Bentley University topped visiting Southern New Hampshire, 69-46, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Saturday at the Dana Center.

Bentley limited Southern New Hampshire to a season-low point total and just 26.6 percent shooting, including only 19 percent over the final 25 minutes after the Penmen used a 7-0 spurt to tie the game at 22-all.

The Falcons closed out the first half with 11 unanswered points, a run that featured eight free throws and one three-pointer, while keeping the Penmen scoreless over the final 5:10. Grassa drained a corner three and a pair of free throws and sophomore guard J.P. Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA) sank six of six free throws while SNHU was mired in an 0-for-9 dry spell.

That spurt, accomplished while McFarland was sitting on the bench with two fouls, sent the Falcons to the locker room up 33-22, and the 15-minute break did nothing to change the momentum.

Bentley outscored SNHU 15-5 over the first seven minutes of the second, extending the lead to 21 at 48-27. McFarland had six during the run, Grassa sank a pair of three-balls and freshman forward Shakir Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden HS) also connected from downtown. Combined with the strong finish to the first half, that was a 26-5 burst over a span of about 12 minutes.

The Penmen (13-10, 9-10) never got closer than 17 the rest of the way with the Bentley lead peaking at 26, 64-38, on Grassa's final trey of the game with 4:12 left.

Grassa needed only nine attempts from outside the arc to record his second straight game with six triples, and he also had four assists and three rebounds. McFarland was also on target from distance, hitting two of his three attempts from downtown, and complemented his 18 points with seven rebounds. Koury, a perfect 8-of-8 at the foul line, followed with 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Off the bench, Bentley received seven points and five rebounds from Phelps, along with seven rebounds from sophomore forward Jate Cheshul (Galloway, N.J./Holy Spirit HS).

Sophomore Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) and freshman Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.), a former high school teammate of Phelps, paced Southern New Hampshire with 10 points apiece and a combined 15 rebounds.

Bentley (8-15, 6-13) had its best three-point shooting night of the year, knocking down 11 of 23, and also dominated the boards, 49-36 with six players having at least five. The Falcons also had the edge from the foul line, making 14 of 15 while SNHU missed five of 11.

Bentley will play its next two on the road, beginning Wednesday night at Franklin Pierce University.
