Blomquist Nets Game-Winner as Bentley Earns 1-0 Shootout Victory over New Haven

WALTHAM, Mass. – On the sixth round of the shootout, sophomore Hannah Bloomquist (Westwood/Westwood) put the ball in the cage to give Bentley University a walk-off 1-0 victory over the University of New Haven Saturday night in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey on the Bentley turf field.

Bentley's fifth straight victory and sixth one-goal win of the season lifted the Falcons to 10-6 overall and 8-3 NE10. With two contests left in the regular season, coach Jessica Spencer's team  lefy the field tied for fourth with New Haven (8-8) in the conference standings.

Following 60 scoreless minutes of regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtime periods, the two teams advanced to a shootout round of five apiece. Sophomore Meagan Hayes (Salem, N.H./Lawrence Academy) was successful on Bentley's second attempt and the 1-0 advantage stood up until New Haven grad student Taylor Geagone (Enfield, Conn.) netted the equalizer on her team's fifth try.

New Haven freshman Erin Smith (Warrington, Pa.) led off the sixth round and her attempt from the right side was off the mark. Bentley sophomore goalie Mia Trottie (Cinnaminson, N.J./Bishop Eustace HS) deflected the ball, forcing Smith into a tough angle.

Blomquist was up next and she put an end to the night. She spun on the goalie to get opener and easily sent the ball into the cage.

After a first half with very few scoring opportunities for either team, Bentley was in control throughout the third quarter but couldn't find the goal. Shots in the stanza were 7-0 Falcons and corners were 6-0. New Haven controlled play in the overtime, but the Falcon defense was up to the challenge.

Trottie, who recorded her third shutout, excelled in the shootout and was credited with two saves.

Bentley will close out the home regular season schedule Monday at 4 pm against St. Michael's College.
