WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior forward Christine Leonard (Marlborough) netted the game's only goal 97 seconds into overtime to give Assumption University a 1-0 victory over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Wednesday night in the rain on the Bentley field hockey field.
Assumption, ranked eighth in Division II this week, improved to a conference-best 6-2 overall, including 3-0 NE10. Bentley, following its first home loss of the year, dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-2 NE10.
After a Falcon turnover near the midfield, Leonard collected a pass ahead from sophomore Mia Saleh (Gloucester). She drove to the cage and slid the ball past Bentley sophomore goalie Erin McGuinness (Rutland/Wachusett Reg. HS) for the game-winner.
Both goalies, McGuiness and Assumption's Kylie Gargiulo (Madison, Conn.), were credited with three saves in the defensive battle.
Assumption had the advantage in both shots, 11-6, and penalty corners, 5-3.
The Falcons are back at it Saturday with a conference game at St. Thomas Aquinas College.
