No. 8 Bentley Falls to No. 4 Assumption in Non-Conference Action

WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite goals from junior Katie Thies (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse HS) and sophomore Lida Coco (Litchfield, Conn./Canterbury School), Bentley University fell to Assumption University, 3-2, in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon on Brian Kelly Field.

Both teams participated in the NCAA Division II championships last season and both were ranked in the top ten in Division II preseason with Bentley eighth and Assumption fourth.

Two goals in a span of five minutes surrounding halftime gave the home team a lead they would not relinquish. Grad student Lucy Malia (Scarborough, Maine) scored on a penalty stroke with 3:04 left in the first half and she assisted freshman Elle Murray (Worcester) 1:38 into the third quarter.

Thies cut the deficit in half 79 seconds after Murray's goal and Coco did the same with 11:10 left in the fourth.

Bentley threatened with two penalty corners in the final seconds but was unable to net the equalizer.

Graduate goalie Kyle Gargiulo (Madison, Conn.) made five shots for Assumption and sophomore Erin McGuinness (Rutland/Wachusett Reg. HS) had four for the Falcons.

Bentley (1-3) outshot the Greyhounds, 13-9, and Assumption (1-2) had a 5-4 edge in penalty corners.

Bentley's next game is at home Saturday against Southern New Hampshire.
