No. 7 New Haven Ousts No. 2 Bentley from NE10 Championships in Stroke-off

WALTHAM, Mass. – After 80 scoreless minutes, the University of New Haven outscored Bentley University 3-1 during a stroke-off and earned a 1-0 victory over the Falcons in the Northeast-10 Conference quarterfinals Monday evening on the Bentley Turf Field.

New Haven, the seventh-seed, improved to 10-9 overall and will move on to face sixth-seeded Adelphi in a semifinal game Thursday. Bentley, 14-5 and seeded second, saw its nine-game winning streak halted and will now have to wait until the announcement of the NCAA Division II championship field next Monday to see if its season will continue.

In the stroke-off, New Haven was successful on its first two attempts while Bentley misfired on its first two. In the third round, after the Chargers missed, Bentley junior Madison Halas (Danbury, Conn./Immaculate HS) made her attempt, cutting the Falcon deficit to 2-1.

New Haven senior Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn.) converted on her team's fourth attempt, and when Bentley failed to do the same, the Chargers were able to celebrate the program's first-ever postseason win.

Play was back-and-forth prior to the stroke-off. New Haven controlled play in the first half (5-2 shots, 3-0 penalty corners) but the third period belonged to Bentley (7-0 shots, 3-0 corners). The Chargers came back to own a 5-2 advantage in shots in the fourth, but the scoreboard remained at 0-0.

Bentley dominated the two 10-minute overtime sessions, outshooting the visitors 11-2 but couldn't put the ball past New Haven graduate netminder Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn.). Seven of her 12 saves came after regulation.

Bentley, which finished with a 22-12 shot advantage, received five saves from freshman Mia Trottie (Cinnaminson, N.J./Bishop Eustace HS).
