Thies & Emma Halas Score as Bentley Blanks St. Thomas Aquinas, 2-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – First-half goals from sophomore Katie Thies (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse HS) and freshman Emma Halas (Danbury, Conn./Immaculate HS) propelled Bentley University to a 2-0 win over Saint Thomas Aquinas in Northeast-10 field hockey action Saturday action on the Bentley Turf Field.

Bentley, with its third win in its last four contests, improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 NE10. STAC dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-3 conference.

Thies' team-leading fourth of the season was scored off a rebound with 3:40 left in the opening quarter. That was a stanza the Falcons dominated with eight shots and four penalty corners, as compared to just one of each for the Spartans.

Halas netted her first career goal with just past the midpoint of the second quarter on a nice backhand from just inside the arc.

The shutout belonged to junior Madison Clark (Natick/Natick HS), who was credited with three saves in her first career start.

Bentley outshot the visitors 18-5 and had a 14-5 edge in penalty corners, including 8-1 in the fourth.

Bentley is right back at home Sunday afternoon with a 1 pm game against St. Michael's College. Falcon field hockey will be recognizing 17th annual Mesothelioma Awareness Day at the game and will be raising funds to help in the fight to find a cure for Mesothelioma, an aggressive form of lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure.
