Katie Thies watches her goal sail into the cage

4 Different Players Score as No. 1 West Chester Downs Bentley, 4-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – Four different players scored to power West Chester University, the number one-ranked team preseason and the reigning NCAA Division II national champion, to a 4-1 win over Bentley University in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon on the Bentley Turf Field.

Following a scoreless opening quarter despite a 7-0 advantage in shots by the Golden Rams, West Chester put two goals on the scoreboard in the second. Both came off penalty corners with junior Sydney Corcoran (Havertown, Pa.) scoring in the 17th minute and freshman midfielder Valerie van Kuijck (Denbosch, The Netherlands) doing so just over six minutes later.

Bentley's only goal of the day came with 10:19 elapsed in the third. Sophomore forward Katie Thies (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse HS) intercepted a high pass inside the West Chester circle, corralled it, eluded the defender and scooped it into the top of the cage for her second goal in as many games.

A penalty stroke by senior Emma Velez about seven minutes later restored West Chester's two-goal advantage and the visitors added an insurance goal in the fourth with van Kuijck providing the assist.

Freshman Mia Trottie (Cinnaminson, N.J./Bishop Eustace HS) had another solid performance in goal for the Falcons as she made nine saves for the second straight game.

West Chester, 2-0, outshot the Falcons 20-4 and finished with a 16-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Bentley, 1-1, will conclude a three-game season-opening homestand Wednesday at 7 pm with a non-conference encounter with Assumption College.
