Murray Gives Bentley 2-1 OT Win over Bloomsburg in Season-Opener

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior tri-captain Christine Murray (Walpole/Walpole HS) delivered the game-winner 91 seconds into the second overtime to give Bentley University a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime win over Bloomsburg University in non-conference field hockey action Friday afternoon on the Bentley Turf Field.

It was the season-opener for both teams and Bentley's first ever in ten all-time meetings against the 13-time Division II national champion Huskies.

Following a shot by junior Ava Bevilacqua (Dedham/Notre Dame Acad.) and a save by Bloomsburg junior keeper Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa.), Murray controlled the rebound and drove the ball into the cage for the win. It was her second career goal and first game-winner.

Bentley's first goal, in the 23rd minute, also came following a Shaffer save as sophomore Katie Thiies (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse HS) redirected a shot from junior Madison Halas (Danbury, Conn./Immaculate HS).

The Falcons maintained the 1-0 lead for nearly 20 minutes, until Huskie grad student Alyssa Broadt (Bloomsburg, Pa.) found the back of the cage in the 52nd minute.

Freshman Mia Trottie (Cinnaminson, N.J./Bishop Eustace HS) impressed in her debut as Bentley's goalie, making nine saves. Shaffer has seven stops for the visitors.

Bentley will be back at home Sunday for a noon encounter with reigning NCAA Division II national champion West Chester University.
