WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore Eva Michaliszyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest HS) scored the game's only goal at 2:06 of the first half and the Falcon defense withstood 16 Warrior penalty corners as Bentley University bested Merrimack College, 1-0, in non-conference college field hockey at Bentley Wednesday night.
Michaliszyn's third career game-winner came off one of only two Falcon penalty corners in the contest. She took a pass from junior midfielder Tori Ellis (Madison, N.J./Madison HS) and put it in the back of the net with a drive from about ten yards out.
Senior goalie Katie Kelley (Walpole/Walpole HS) posted four saves en route to her ninth career shutout and was helped out by defensive saves recorded by Ellis and senior midfielder Kelsey Howard (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough HS).
The domination in penalty corners helped the visiting Warriors outshoot the Falcons 16-5, including 14-1 in the second half.
Bentley ran its record to 2-1, including 2-0 at home, while Merrimack, ranked tenth in the preseason NFHCA Division II coaches poll, was playing its season opener.
Bentley is on the road Saturday for a 4:30 contest at LIU Post.
