No. 5 Bentley Falls to 4th-Seeded Adelphi Despite Efforts of Kelley

GARDEN CITY, N.J. – Sophomore Molly Cuevas (San Jose, Calif.) scored her eighth goal of the season 6:12 into the first sudden-victory overtime period to give Adelphi University a 2-1 win over Bentley University in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Field Hockey Championships Tuesday afternoon at Motamed Field.

Fourth-seeded Adelphi, with its second win in four days over the Falcons, will advance to face top-seeded and unbeaten LIU Post in Friday's semifinals. Bentley finished the season at 11-8 overall with three of the losses coming in OT.

Adelphi, also 11-8 overall, dominated play and had more shots and penalty corners in six-minute extra session (4 of each) than Bentley had in total (3 of each).  The Panthers kept the pressure on Falcon sophomore goalie Katie Kelley (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS) and the rest of the defense all day, finishing with 22 shots and 23 penalty corners.

Kelley was up to the challenge throughout with her 12 saves a career-best, bettering the 10 she made in Saturday's 3-1 loss at Adelphi, a win that gave the Panthers the higher seed and the right to host the first-round game.

As was the case Saturday, Bentley struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when sophomore Meghan Talerman (Centerville/Barnstable HS) scored her ninth goal of the year. After Panther sophomore goalie Kelly Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) denied her first shot (her only save of the day), Talerman knocked in the rebound for what proved to be the Falcons' final goal of the year.

Adelphi answered 4:32 into the second with sophomore Kristen Bagley (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored her ninth of the year following a centering pass from senior Brittany Souke (East Sandwich, Mass.).

Cuevas, who scored all three Adelphi goals on Saturday, knocked the ball into the left side of the cage after Kelley had been drawn to the right side.
