AIC Turns Table on Bentley, Ousts Falcons in OT in NE-10 Playoffs

WALTHAM, Mass. – Eighteen days after Bentley University posted a 3-2 overtime decision over American International College, the fifth-seeded Yellow Jackets did the exact same to the Falcons Wednesday, ousting Bentley from the Northeast-10 Conference Field Hockey Playoffs with a goal 1:33 into the first extra session.

Senior Amanda McLean scored the game-winner on the only shot of OT to elevate the fifth-seeded and ninth-ranked (Division II) Yellow Jackets into Friday's semifinals at Merrimack College.  Bentley, the tournament's fourth seed by virtue of the win over AIC earlier in the month, saw its season end at 10-9.  The Falcons were ranked tenth in Division II this week.

Freshman Jenna Masionis (Ashland) provided the assist (her second of the game) on McLean's goal. She sent it in close from out near the circle, and McLean knocked it in for the game-ender just 1:27 into extra time.

This was a tale of two completely different halves with the two clubs combining for four goals and 20 shots (15 by Bentley) in the opening 35 minutes and only four shots in a scoreless but physical second half that included three yellow cards (two Bentley, one AIC).

AIC (12-7) claimed a 2-0 lead with little more than 14 minutes having elapsed in the contest as the Jackets' first two shots found the back of the net. Junior Lisa Duckles (Netcong, N.J.) scored her seventh of the year at 8:59 and junior Mackenzie Kewley (Rutland) followed with her eighth goal at 14:10.

The two-goal advantage was reduced to one in the 17th minute after a successful penalty stroke by Bentley junior Nicole Dion (Lunenburg/Lunenburg HS). The equalizer and final goal of regulation was netted at 21:22 by senior and reigning NE-10 Player of the Week Stephanie Sideris (Watertown/ Watertown HS). Her 15th of the year, and 31st of her stellar career, was unassisted.

Senior Kim Steiner (Little Falls, N.Y.) made eight saves for AIC, and junior Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) was credited with two for Bentley.  Each team also received a defensive save, senior Lacey Cumming (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury HS) for the Falcons and senior Meghan Healey (Greenfield) for the visitors.

Bentley, which had been looking for its record 10th NE-10 playoff title, finished with a 17-8 shot advantage and also had one more penalty corner, 10-9.

In the other semifinal, sixth-seeded Stonehill upended third-seeded Franklin Pierce, 3-0. Friday's semifinals will have Stonehill face defending champion UMass-Lowell and AIC take on regular season champion Merrimack.
