Sideris Saves Best for Last, Scores 6 Times in 9-1 Bentley Win over Southern Connecticut

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Stephanie Sideris (Watertown/Watertown HS), playing in the final regular season game of her career, erupted for six goals and one assist as Bentley University rolled to a 9-1 Senior Day victory over Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Saturday afternoon.

Sideris, with the six goals and 13 points, flirted with the school records of seven and 15, set by Annette Brow back in 1983. The offensive explosion boosted her career goal total to 30, tying for tenth on Bentley's all-time list.

The win assured Bentley (9-9, 6-4 NE-10) of a first-round home game in the conference playoffs that start on Wednesday.

Southern Connecticut (5-13, 2-8) actually scored first, junior Erica Fisher (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) knocking the ball into the cage in the third minute.  It remained that way until Sideris and junior Nicole Dion (Lunenburg/ Lunenburg HS) teamed up on a break, a play that culminated with Sideris scoring the equalizer at 12:48 of the opening period.

That was the first of four goals in just 4:37 for the Falcons. Senior Tori Bergantino (Waltham/ Waltham HS) netted what proved to be the game-winner at 15:23, scoring off a deflection, and Sideris shot to the far post for a goal just 20 seconds later. At the 18:25 mark of the opening half, Dion took a centering pass from Sideris and sent it into the net for her ninth of the season.

Freshman Gina Lirange (Auburn/Auburn HS) opened the second-half scoring for Bentley at 37:47, and Sideris broke the game wide open by finding the back of the net four times in a nine-minute span, from 51:57 to 60:47.

"Stephanie has the ability to dominate in a game, but this was something special today," said Bentley coach Jessica Spencer. "What a performance."  The six goals boosted her season total to 14.

In sharp comparison to Sideris' six goals, Southern Connecticut managed only three shots as a team. Bentley was credited with 23, and had a 9-2 edge in penalty corners.

Juniors Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) and Kaitlyn Riley (Wilmington Wilmington HS) shared time in goal for Bentley, with each credited with one save.

Details regarding Wednesday's playoff game will be posted when available.
