Bergantino, Powell Help Bentley Post 2-0 Win at St. Michael’s

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior midfielder Tori Bergantino (Waltham, Mass./Waltham HS) had both a goal and an assist, and junior Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) registered the shutout, as the Bentley University field hockey team moved into a tie for third place in the Northeast-10 Conference with a 2-0 win at St. Michael's College Tuesday afternoon.

Bentley, with its fourth win in five games, improved to 5-3 in the conference and 8-7 overall.  St. Michael's, despite having the statistical advantage (11-7 shots, 15-5 penalty corners), slid to 3-6 NE-10 and 3-13 overall.

Bergantino staked the Falcons to the early lead, scoring her second of the season 5:58 into the contest. After a shot from classmate Stephanie Sideris (Watertown, Mass./Watertown HS) was blocked, she sent the rebound into the cage for what proved to be the game-winner.

With about 20 minutes left in the contest, junior Beth Maguire (Medfield, Mass./Medfield HS) put the ball past St. Michael's netminder Jackie Stacey (West Windsor, Vt.) following a feed from Bergantino.

Powell made five saves en route to her fifth shutout of the season, and senior Lacey Cumming (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) made a defensive save in the 54th minute. Stacey was not credited with any stops for the Purple Knights.

Bentley plays at Saint Anselm College Thursday afternoon (4 pm) before finishing the regular season at home with a 1 pm encounter against Southern Connecticut State Saturday.
