Levins Hat Trick Helps Franklin Pierce Knock Off Bentley, 4-2

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Tia Levins (Manchester, Maine) scored three times in a span of 20 minutes to help Franklin Pierce University complete a season sweep of Bentley University, 4-2, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Wednesday night at Bentley.

Bentley, which was ranked tenth in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division II coaches poll and debuted at number four in the NCAA Division II North Region rankings earlier in the day, fell to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference.  Franklin Pierce moved ahead of the Falcons in the NE-10 standings, improving to 7-8 overall and 4-3 NE-10.

Bentley struck first with junior midfielder Kaitlyn Marcinek (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) finding the back of the net at 18:53 of the opening half. Exactly 100 seconds later, Levins delivered the equalizer, off a pass from junior Megan Bird (Laconia, N.H.), and the two teams completed the first half about 15 minutes later even at 1-1.

Levins broke the game open by scoring twice in the first 5:01 after play resumed, with the hat trick boosting her season goal total to 15.  In the 11th minute of the second half, she provided the assist when senior Danielle Dolan (West Brookfield) extended the advantage to 4-1.

Bentley got one goal back with 18:55 left when junior Nicole Dion (Lunenburg/Lunenburg HS) netted her fifth of the season.  However, despite spending much of the second half in the Ravens' defensive circle, the Falcons were unable to come any closer.

The Falcons had 16 shots and a 10-1 edge in penalty corners in the second half, but couldn't overcome Pierce's fast start following halftime.  Overall for the game, Bentley had a 24-13 advantage in shots and twice as many corners, 16-8.

Senior Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro) made nine saves to record the win in goal for FPU, and Bentley junior Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) was credited with seven stops.

Bentley will play its next three on the road, beginning Saturday with a noontime start at Assumption College.
