Late Goals Lift AIC Past Bentley, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Junior Jessica Hall (Higganum, Conn.) and senior Rhonwen Peters (Aquashicola, Pa.) each scored late in the second half, propelling American International College to a 2-1 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Saturday afternoon at Bentley.

AIC improved to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference while avenging an earlier 2-1 loss to the Falcons. Bentley dropped its third straight, dipping to 6-12 overall and 2-7 in the NE-10.

The two halves were distinctly different with AIC controlling the first half (7-0 shot advantage, 6-0 in penalty corners) and Bentley doing most of the attacking after intermission.  Still, the game remained scoreless until just under 10 minutes remained in the second half.

Hall ended the scoring drought with 9:50 left, the ball going off her stick and slowly rolling across the goal line. Just under three minutes later, Peters netted her sixth of the season with her shot going off the pads of Bentley sophomore netminder Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) and into the cage.

Bentley cut the margin in half with 4:46 remaining when sophomore Beth Maguire (Medfield/ Medfield HS) deflected a shot from junior Tori Bergantino (Waltham/Waltham HS) into the goal.  It was Maguire's team-leading eighth tally of the season.

AIC finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots after being outshot 8-5 in the second half, and attempted eight of the game's 11 penalty corners.

Junior Kim Steiner (Little Falls, N.Y.) earned the win in goal for AIC, making a total of five saves. Powell had three stops for Bentley and junior Ariann Williams (Winchendon/Dana Hall School) was credited with a defensive save.

Bentley closes out its season on Wednesday with a 6 pm game against St. Michael's.
