Heimerle Goal in 2nd OT Lifts Adelphi Past Bentley, 2-1

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. -- Twenty-eight seconds into the second overtime period, junior Jeannette Heimerle (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season to give Adelphi University a 2-1 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Saturday afternoon at Motemad Field.

Overtime has not been kind to the Falcons, who played beyond regulation for the third straight game and the sixth time in 2010. Five of the team's 10 losses have come in OT, the lone exception being Wednesday's 4-3 win at Assumption.

Adelphi took the early lead with Theresa Murphy scoring off a Helmerle assist in the 10th minute of the game. It remained at 1-0 until the Falcons were awarded a penalty stroke with 21:44 left in regulation. Junior Stephanie Sideris (Watertown, Mass./Watertown HS) took it and found the back of the cage, the ball going off the glove of Panther netminder Lucia Vigliotti (Westbury, N.Y.).

While Adelphi controlled play in the first half (a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners), that turned around in the second half with Bentley awarded 10 corners to the Panthers' four.

In the first OT, both clubs had excellent changes to score, but the two goalkeepers, Vigliotti and Bentley sophomore Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) were up to the challenge. Adelphi had a couple opportunities in the first couple minutes, and hit the post midway through the 15-minute period. Meanwhile, Vigliotti came up with three stops of Falcon shots.

For the game-winner, junior Brittany Kinsley (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) brought the ball down into the circle and fed Hemmerle.

Powell finished with 10 saves, one more than her counterpart from Adelphi.

Bentley, in serious danger of missing the conference playoffs for the first time, fell to 2-5 in the NE-10 and 6-10 overall. Adelphi left the field at 4-2 in the conference and 9-6 overall.

Bentley is back at home on Tuesday for an encounter with unbeaten UMass-Lowell.
