Sideris OT Goal Caps Rally, Gives Bentley 4-3 Win over Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior Stephanie Sideris (Watertown/Watertown HS) scored her third goal of the season 1:52 into the first overtime session, capping a Bentley University rally that saw the Falcons come back from a 3-1 deficit to record a 4-3 victory over Assumption College in non-conference college field hockey Wednesday night at Assumption's Multi-Sport Stadium.

Bentley, down 3-1 with under 11 minutes left and in serious danger of becoming the first team to lose to the Greyhounds in 2010, stormed back with two goals in the final 10:13 of regulation to force the overtime.

The comeback began when senior Haley Smith (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) netted her third of the year, scoring out of a crowd in front of the net with just over 10 minutes left. Just about two-and-a-half minutes later, sophomore Beth Maguire (Medfield/Medfield HS) drove the ball into the Greyhound cage from about 13 yards out. The game-tying goal was her team-best seventh of the season.

With Assumption playing a man-down following a yellow card, Bentley was able to capitalize. Following a penalty corner, junior Tori Bergantino (Waltham/Waltham HS) sent the ball inside the circle. Sideris, open near the left post, redirected the ball into the goal for the game-winner.

Bergantino had staked Bentley to a 1-0 goal in the 10th minute. Sophomore Britt Allen (Lincoln, R.I.) countered for Assumption about seven minutes later, and it remained 1-1 until junior Amanda Whaley (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored for the home team 6:56 into the second half.  Twelve minutes later, Whaley scored again, putting the Greyhounds up 3-1 a little past the midpoint of the second half.

Bentley finished with a commanding 23-7 advantage in shots, but penalty corners were much closer, 14-10 in favor of the Falcons.

Bentley, after snapping a three-game slide, improved to 6-9 overall and Assumption fell to 0-14. The Falcons conclude a stretch of four straight on the road Saturday afternoon at Adelphi University.
