Dembofsky Goal Lifts Southern Connecticut State Past Bentley in OT, 4-3
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Sophomore Laurie Cockerline (Lopatcong, N.J.) forced overtime with a goal two seconds before regulation ended and sophomore Laura Dembofsky (Stamford, Conn.) scored her third goal of the season7:04 into the first extra session as Southern Connecticut State University stunned Bentley University, 4-3, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.
Bentley, with its third straight loss, slipped to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the conference. The win was the fourth in seven NE-10 contests for Southern, which improved to 6-9 overall.
Bentley twice held a one-goal advantage in the second half, leading 2-1 with 32:30 to play after junior Tori Bergantino (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) scored her second of the season and 3-2 with 11:31 remaining following the second of the year from Stephanie Sideris (Watertown, Mass./Watertown HS).
Each time, the Owls countered, including the stunning goal by Cockerline with only two seconds to play in the second half. It was a four-point afternoon for Cockerline, who had the assist on each of her team's first two goals.
Bentley's other goal was scored by freshman Brandy Asplundh (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Acad. of the New Church). Coming in the 18th minute with Sideris providing the assist, it evened the game at 1-1 at the time.
Senior Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) earned the win in goal for Southern, making a total of seven saves. Sophomore Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomeraug HS) was credited with 12 saves for the Falcons.
Southern outshot the visitors, 27-19, and had a 17-8 advantage in penalty corners.
Bentley continues its string of four straight road games Wednesday night at Assumption College.
