Three Score First Goal of Season as Bentley Wins 4th Straight, 3-1 over Assumption

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Three different players, included freshman Kaitlyn Marcinek (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS), scored their first goal of the season as Bentley University extended its winning streak to four with a 3-1 win over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Saturday afternoon at Bentley.

Bentley, with the win in its 2010 conference opener, evened its overall record at 4-4. Assumption remains in search of its first victory, the Greyhounds falling to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

Marcinek netted what proved to be the winning goal, scoring in the 25th minute with classmate Brandy Asplundh (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Acad. of the New Church) providing the assist.

Bentley opened the game up in a five-minute stretch in the second half. Junior Tori Bergantino (Waltham/Waltham HS) made it 2-0 with 25:13 left, and junior Stephanie Sideris (Watertown/ Watertown HS) followed a little under five minutes later.

Assumption spoiled the shutout bid of sophomore Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) with just under 11 minutes left, sophomore Jess MacDonald (Morris, Conn.) putting the ball into the cage for the first time this season. Powell finished with two saves, and Assumption senior Danielle Luongo (Northboro) registered nine stops.

Bentley outshot the Hounds by a count of 18-6, and also had an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.

The Falcons will be back at home on Tuesday night for a 7 pm meeting with Stonehill College.
