Maguire Helps Bentley Claim 1st Win, 3-1 over Southern Connecticut

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Sophomore Beth Maguire (Medfield/Medfield HS) helped stake her team to an early lead and completed a three-point night with a second-half assist as the Bentley University field hockey team recorded its first win of 2010, 3-1 over Southern Connecticut State in  non-conference action Wednesday evening at Bentley.

Maguire made it a 1-0 game in the fifth minute as she finished a Falcon penalty corner. Junior Stephanie Sideris (Watertown/Watertown HS) took the hit and Maguire deflected the shot of senior Devan Weed (Hampton, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) into the cage for her third goal of the season.

About five-and-a-half minutes later, senior Haley Smith (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) netted her second of the season off a rebound, making it a 2-0 game.

Both teams picked up a goal about 90 seconds apart 11 minutes into the second half with sophomore Nicole Dion (Lunenburg/Lunenburg HS) giving Bentley a 3-0 lead and sophomore Laurie Cockerline (Lopatcong, N.J.) countering for Southern.

Sophomore Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) earned her first career win for Bentley, with six of her seven saves coming after intermission. Senior Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) registered 10 saves for the Owls (1-5).

Bentley had 14 of the 15 first-half shots and finished with a 19-14 edge as Southern attacked more after the break. The Owls finished with the edge in corners, their 6-4 advantage including five in the second half to the Falcons' one.

Bentley, 1-4, will be at St. Michael's for a non-conference match Saturday at 1 pm.
