Sturm Leads No. 21 Bentley to 48-23 Senior Day Win over Assumption; Win No. 9 for the Falcons

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior quarterback Stephen Sturm (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley HS) accounted for five touchdowns, including four through the air on 12-of-13 passing, as Bentley University closed out the regular season with an impressive 48-23 Senior Day win over Assumption University in Northeast-10 Conference football Saturday afternoon at Bentley.

Bentley, ranked 21st in Division II and fifth in Super Region 1, improved to 9-1 overall, including 7-1 NE10, and won for the 14th time in the last 15 games. Coach Bill Kavanaugh's team will now await the Sunday's NCAA Division II selection show (www.NCAA.com, 5 pm) to find out their postseason fate.

Down 10-7 with just under six minutes left in the first half, Bentley took the lead for good on a 30-yard pass from Sturm to classmate Austin Ryan (Foxboro/Foxboro HS) with 4:31 left in the second quarter. It was a quick three-play, 63-yard drive after Assumption had reclaimed the lead with an 18-play drive that lasted nearly nine minutes.

Senior tailback Andrew Brazicki (Franklin Park, N.J./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) accounted for the other 33 yards on the drive, on runs of 13 and 20 yards.

Bentley broke the game wide open by scoring three times during a two-minute span surrounding halftime. An eight-play, 81-yard march, capped by a 20-yard pass to senior Noah Neville (Boston/Newton North HS) with 19 seconds remaining on the first-half clock sent the home team into the halftime break up 10.

By the time the third quarter was 100 seconds old, it was a 34-10 game as Bentley came up with interceptions on first two plays from scrimmage and quickly capitalized. Grad student Jack Scordato (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo HS) had the first with eight seconds elapsed and on the Falcons' ensuing play, Brazicki took it in from the 16. Brazicki, who had finished a 99-yard scoring drive with a 28-yard reception in the opening stanza, moved into third on Bentley's career rushing list with that carry.

The very next play was picked off by junior Matt Severance (Lynn/Lynn English) and three plays later, Sturm broke a 36-yard run for the touchdown.

The Falcons also scored on their next possession, their fifth TD in a little more than a 15-minute span. This one was a 35-yard pass from Sturm to Ryan. It was the 57th career TD pass for the lefty, who surpassed 7,000 career passing yards, and the 22nd caught by Ryan.

Bentley's final score was a nine-yard run by senior Isaiah Collins (Dorchester Center/Belmont Hill School) that made it 48-10 at the time.

Sturm, whose pass efficiency was an incredible 348.28, totaled 294 yards of offense with 239 passing and 55 on the ground. Ryan led the receiving corps with four for 78 yards.

Brazicki ran the ball 12 times for 63 yards, caught two passes for 38 yards and finished the 2,230 career rushing yards.

Senior Edgar Semedo (New Bedford/New Bedford HS) led the Falcons in tackles with a career-high ten and the Falcon D limited the Greyhounds to just 24 yards in the third quarter.

Bentley outgained the Hounds 467-363, had a slim 23-22 edge in first downs and averaged 8.5 yards per play.
