Fueled by Youth, Bentley Looks for 5th Win in 6 Games Saturday Night at Stonehill

WALTHAM, Mass. – After staging a fourth-quarter comeback for a 28-10 win over American International, the Bentley University Falcons will be looking for earn their fifth win in their last six contests Saturday evening when they play a 6 pm contest at Stonehill College.

A free webcast will be available at www.stonehillskyhawks.tv.

Coach Bill Kavanaugh's Falcons will enter the weekend at 4-2 overall and 4-1 Northeast-10, good for a tie for second with the University of New Haven. They trail only undefeated Assumption College, currently the 14th-ranked team in Division II. Bentley will close out the season against those two, hosting New Haven Nov. 4 and playing at Assumption a week later.

Stonehill, 3-3 overall and 2-3 conference, is in a four-way tie for fifth place after being edged by New Haven on the road this past weekend, 23-22.

Much of Bentley's success to date, including the come-from-behind effort against AIC, can be attributed to the contributions from youth. Sophomore corner Peter Thorbahn (Norwell/Xavarian Bros. HS), the NE10 Defensive Player of the Week, had two interceptions in the fourth, including a pick-six, and the other two touchdowns involved freshmen.

Running back Andrew Brazicki (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop Ahr HS) scored his second of the game with 9:06 left and the final TD came on a 21-yard scoring strike, the first of his collegiate career, from Stephen Sturm (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley HS) to Austin Ryan (Foxborough/Foxborough HS) with 4:25 left.

Brazicki and Ryan are the two highest scoring freshmen in the conference, each with six touchdowns on the season. Ryan is fourth in Division II in receiving yards per catch, averaging 24.1 with his 22 reception second on the team. Brazicki, Bentley's leading rusher with 366 yards, owns a 5.0 yard-per-carry norm.

Combined, the duo has scored 12 of the Falcons' 21 touchdowns.

On the offensive line, freshman Sean Mitchell (Park Ridge, N.J./Saint Joseph Reg. HS) has started every game at center and classmate Tim Leonard (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven HS) has gotten the nod in the last two at left tackle.

Sophomores have also played a key role this season, particularly in the secondary where they make up three-quarters of the starters. Thorbahn, a second-team All-Conference honoree a year ago, has three interceptions, five pass break-ups and a forced fumble. Quintin McDermott (Franklin/ Milton Academy) has forced three fumbles and picked off two passes, and Derek Perkins (Milton/Milton HS) has both an interception and a recovery.

Through six games, Bentley has the third-ranked defense (342.5 yards, 20.5 points) in the conference while Stonehill is sixth in points allowed (30.3) and tenth in yards given up (431.5). The Falcons lead the NE10 in both turnover margin (+7) and takeaways forced (18). On the other hand, Stonehill has come up with eight loose balls, matching the number they've lost.

Stonehill's offense features six-seven senior QB Matt Foltz, who has thrown for 13 touchdowns, and his favorite target, Andrew Jamiel. The sophomore, who has 47 catches for 568 yards, is the only player in the conference with more receptions than Bentley junior Drew Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield Academy) (46) and is one of only three with more receiving yards than Ryan.

The Skyhawks have been impressive once they've gotten to the red zone this season, scoring 95 percent of the time with 14 touchdowns and four field goals in 19 trips. On the other hand, Bentley is third in the NE10 in red zone defense, allowing 11 touchdowns and three field goals in 19 trips. The five stops have included four interceptions.

Bentley and Stonehill met twice a year ago with the Falcons taking the regular season match-up 27-7 and the Skyhawks turning the table during NE10 championship weekend, 38-21. Bentley leads the all-time varsity series, 22-9-1, but has come up short on four of its last five trips to W.B. Mason Stadium.

Following Saturday's game, Bentley will play its next two at home, Southern Connecticut State on Oct. 28 and New Haven on Nov. 4.

BENTLEY BRIEFS: A win on Saturday would even Kavanaugh's career record at 20-20 … What a difference a year makes! Last season, the Falcons were outscored 77-27 in the fourth quarter. This year, Bentley is a +45 (69-24) in the final stanza … Mahoney has climbed to seventh in career receptions with 126. Immediately in front of him is Brian Whalen (1999-2002, 135) … Brazicki has scored a touchdown in five of the Falcons' six games.
