Stonehill Avenges Earlier Loss, Rolls to 38-21 win over Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore quarterback James Lam (Quincy) threw three TD passes and ran for another, and freshman Matthew Haite (Kingston) booted three field goals, as Stonehill College rolled to a 38-21 win over Bentley University in college football action Saturday afternoon at Bentley.

The Skyhawks, who dropped a 27-7 decision to the Falcons on the same field three weeks ago, scored the game's first 24 points and the final 14. In between, Bentley reeled off 21 unanswered to close within three with 2:54 left in the third quarter.

Junior QB Mack Lowrie (Foxborough/Roxbury Latin HS), as he did in the first meeting on Oct. 22, threw three TD passes for Bentley, including a pair to sophomore Michael Correia (Fall River/ Durfee HS).

Stonehill scored on four of its first five possessions and capitalized on a fumbled kickoff return after going up 10-0 with 1:59 left in the opening quarter. The game's opening drive finished with a 35-yard field goal by Haite.

After Bentley missed a potential game-tying field goal (37 yards), Stonehill made it a 10-0 game when Lam connected with freshman Brian Kearns, Jr. (North Arlington, N.J.) on a short pass and Kearns, Jr. taking it the distance for a 56-yard touchdown.

Less than a minute later, a 24-yard pass from Lams to freshman Andrew Jamiel (West Yarmouth) made it a 17-0 game with 67 seconds still left on the first-quarter clock.

Lams teamed up with junior Kevin Dick (Tewksbury) with 6:33 left in the second quarter, the 6-yard scoring strike making it a 24-0 game.

Bentley got on the board with 36 seconds left in the opening, a seven-play, 44-yard drive finished when Lowrie found Correia in the end zone for a five-yard TD.

In the third, the Falcons drew within three as Lowrie threw TD passes of 16 yards to sophomore running back Eric Sugarman (Fu    quay Varina, N.C./Fuquay Varina HS) and three yards to Correia. The latter came after a Skyhawk pass interference call on fourth down kept the Bentley drive alive.

Stonehill scored on three straight possessions in the final stanza while the Falcons were limited to only two first downs in the quarter. Field goals of 35 and 25 by Haite made it a two-possession game and the visitors completed the scoring when Lams ran it in from the two with 1:39 left.

Stonehill (5-6) outgained the Falcons 384-226, controlled the ball for 35:37, converted 11 of 19 third downs and had the game's only two takeaways. Lams was 14 of 22 for 138 yards, and both sophomore Mike Cordova (Monroe, N.J.) and Kearns, Jr. ran for over 100 yards. Cordova had 19 carries for 110 and Kearns 18 for 105.

Lowrie finishes 17 of 36 for 164 yards with sophomore Drew Mahoney (Suffield, Conn./ Suffield Academy) pulling in eight for 80 yards. He had 136 all-purpose yards, including two kickoff returns for 49 yards.

Bentley senior linebacker Bryan Hardy (Barnstable/Barnstable), as he frequently does, led both teams in tackles with 11. That gave him a school record total of 332 for his career and a conference-leading 121 for the season.

Falcon senior Tyler Ford (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan HS) averaged a school record 55.6 yards for five punts, breaking his own school single game record by more than five yards. He finished the season with a 45.1 average and his career at 41.7, both school and Northeast-10 records.

Bentley finished at 5-6 overall for the third consecutive season.
