Bentley Set to Face Stonehill on Senior Day, Looking for Win No. 5

WALTHAM, Mass. – After defeating American International in consecutive seasons for the first time in nearly a decade, the Bentley University Falcons will look to improve to 5-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference when they complete the regular season home schedule Saturday afternoon with a Senior Day game against Stonehill College. Kickoff is slated for 1 pm with a free webcast available at www.bentleyfalcons.tv.

Prior to the game, Bentley's 22 seniors will be recognized with the list including 12 from the offensive side of the ball, eight from the defense and two special teamers.

Five of the offensive players are linemen, including starters Ryan Anger (Worcester/St. John's Shrewsbury), Eric Beckwith (North Attleboro/North Attleboro HS) and Matt Biscardi (Holbrook, N.Y./ St. Anthony's HS). The other two are Michael Dulac (White River Junction, Vt./Hartford HS), who has been injured this season, and reserve Chris Soule (Stamford, Conn./Westhill HS).

The other seniors on the offensive side of the ball are quarterback CJ Scarpa (Andover/Andover HS), tight end Mark Bonner (Wayland/Wayland HS), wide receivers Chris Calvanese (Norfolk/Xaverian Bros. HS) and Sean Myers (Foxborough/Roxbury Latin HS), and a trio of running backs: Martin Bannerman (Pawtucket, R.I./La Salle Academy), George Craan (Hyde Park/Concord-Carlisle HS) and Matt Montalto (West Yarmouth/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS).

The defensive players who'll be recognized include leading tackler Bryan Hardy (Barnstable/ Barnstable HS) and three members of the Falcons' talented secondary: Sam McDonald (Norfolk/King Philip Reg. HS), Junior Chery (Waltham/Waltham HS) and Lamar Hardy (Centreville, Va./Westfield HS).

In addition, Bentley will honor defensive linemen Keith Ducharme (Quinebaug, Conn./ Pomfret School), defensive end Phil Rigoglioso (Ridgewood, N.J./Bergen Catholic HS), and linebackers Jack Sarnoski (Lancaster/Nashoba Reg. HS) and Shane Wellman (Taunton/Taunton HS).

Completing the list are record-breaking punter Tyler Ford (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan HS) and long snapper Sean Pruneau (Plano, Texas/Plano West HS).

Bentley, 4-3 overall, is coming off a 5-3 win in a defensive battle at AIC Saturday. A safety by junior Joey Piatnik (Bethel, Conn./Bethel HS) and a 30-yard field goal by freshman Grant Buchanan (Holliston/ Holliston HS) accounted for all of the Falcons' scoring in a game that they were limited to 205 total yards by the stingy AIC defense.

Ford played a key role for coach Bill Kavanaugh's team as he was called upon to boot the ball away a school record 12 times. He had the longest punt in program history (73), pinned the Yellow Jackets back to their own ten for a possession that resulted in a safety, and put another one out of bounds at the three.

Ford's 44.7 average is fifth best nationally in Division II and nearly two yards better than the school record he set in 2015. His 41.2 career mark is both the best in program history and an NE-10 record.

Junior QB Mack Lowrie (Foxborough/Roxbury Latin HS) made his first Bentley start on Saturday and finished 16 of 36 for 79 yards. For the season, he's completed half of his 50 passes for 256 yards and one TD.

Montalto has taken over as Bentley's leading rusher (232 yards) after accounting for over half the Falcons' offense at AIC. He carried the ball 20 times for 92 yards, had 18 receiving yards and totaled 184 all-purpose yards, giving him 379 the last two games. Montalto's 27.4 average on kickoff returns is third best in the conference and Bentley's best since 2007.

Bryan Hardy, the reigning NE-10 co-Defensive Player of the Week, will enter Saturday's contest 13 tackles shy of 300 career, a milestone no player in the program's varsity history has achieved, and as the NE-10 leader with a 10.9 average.

Bentley's string of 13 straight games forcing multiple turnovers ended at AIC, but the Falcons still came up with their 14th interception of the season, a total that ranks fifth in Division II. Freshman Peter Thorbahn (Norwell/Xaverian HS) accounted for that pick and now has four for the season, tying for the conference lead.

Stonehill, in Eli Gardner's first season at the helm, will come into the game at 3-4 overall and 3-3 NE-10 after winning three of its last four, including a come-from-behind effort against New Haven this past Saturday, 21-17. The Skyhawks have picked up the defense the last three weeks, giving up an average of 14 points during that time after yielding 35 a game during the first four weeks. They blanked New Haven in the second half after entering intermission down 17-7.

The Skyhawks have averaged 34:49 in possession time, fourth best nationally, and have run an amazing 130 more plays from scrimmage than their opponents.

Freshman Andrew Jamiel, the current NE-10 Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week, is coming off a school-record 18-catch performance against New Haven. He's had a standout rookie season as he leads Division II in receptions, averaging 10.4 a game. Five of his 73 catches have resulted in touchdowns and he averages 9.2 yards per reception.

Getting the ball to Jamiel has been second-year starting QB Matt Foltz. The six-foot-seven junior has completed 64 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,685 yards and nine TDs. His yardage is up over 40 yards a game from last season but his number of TD passes is down significantly from last year's total of 25.

Stonehill has rushed for 11 touchdowns, fourth most in the NE-10, with five of those belonging to Mike Cordova, the NE-10's second-leading rusher (546 yards).

Strong safety Nick Bona and middle linebacker Ryan Doherty share the team-lead in tackles with 54, and Andy Steck has blocked three kicks.

Bentley will be looking for its first win in the series since 2012 after dropping back-to-back seven-point decisions the last two seasons.  Last year, the Falcons claimed a 14-13 lead with 3:49 to play, only to see the Skyhawks answer 18 seconds later following a 35-yard field goal and a pair of 15-yard penalties.

Following Saturday's game, two trips to Connecticut remain before the Northeast-10 championship weekend game on Nov. 12. The Falcons will visit Southern Connecticut next Saturday and the University of New Haven Nov. 5.

BENTLEY BRIEFS: The five points scored by Bentley on Saturday was its lowest total in a win since a 6-0 victory against Merrimack in 1989 … The Falcons have won eight of the last ten times they've rushed for 100 yards, including 4-1 this fall … The opponents have had the advantage in possession time in five of seven games this season … Coach Bill Kavanaugh will enter his 30th game as Falcon head coach with a 14-15 record.
