Hoffman & Bernadeau Tabbed for Northeast-10 Hall of Fame

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Longtime Bentley University volleyball coach Sandy Hoffman, who lost a long battle with cancer August 31, and former Bentley All-America offensive lineman Mackenzy Bernadeau, who is now preparing for his ninth season in the NFL, were among those inducted into the Northeast-10 Conference Hall of Fame Monday night during the conference's annual year-end banquet at the Providence Hilton.

Hoffman, the winningest women's volleyball coach in New England history, served as Bentley's head coach from 1982 until illness forced her to step down before the 2014 season, and also served as one of the university's assistant athletics directors during most of her tenure.

During her 32 years at the helm, Hoffman amassed a record of 758-366 with her victory total currently the sixth most in Division II volleyball history. She directed Bentley to 11 Northeast-10 regular season championships, nine NE-10 tournament championships and 11 NCAA Division II tournament berths.

Hoffman was the Northeast-10 Coach of the Year eight times, most recently in 2013, and since that same year, the award has carried her name.

During her lengthy and courageous fight against adrenal cortical cancer, Hoffman, along with her players (past and current), helped raise funds for research at the Dana Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center. Hoffman and her team were recognized in May 2015 by the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer at the One Hundred, an event that honors those who inspire others to fight cancer.

Hoffman was previously inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2014), the Bentley Athletic Hall of Fame (2015) and the Manhasset High School (N.Y.) Hall of Fame.

Bernadeau, now a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, spent the last four years with the Dallas Cowboys after beginning his career with the Carolina Panthers. A seventh-round draft pick out of Bentley in 2008, he has played in 111 career games, the 29th most among the 252 players selected that season (and fifth most among offensive linemen). Only 11 active seventh-round picks have played in more career games.

The six-foot-four, 322-pounder appeared in all 16 games in six of the last seven seasons, including all four years with the Cowboys. One start shy of 50 for his career, he's challenging for a starting role at left guard for the Jaguars this fall.

Before getting the call from the NFL, Bernadeau was a two-time Northeast-10 Offensive Lineman of the Year (2006, 2007) who started all 37 games he played in a Bentley uniform. He earned multiple All-America accolades as a senior, including first-team honors from the American Football Coaches Association, despite having his final season cut short by a knee injury.

The Waltham native and two-year Bentley captain earned first team All-Northeast-10 honors three times and was also a three-time ECAC Division II All-Star. Bernadeau was twice named to the Daktronics Division II All-Region first team, was a three-time Football Gazette Division II All-Region selection (including first team in 2006 and 2007), and was chosen to play in both the 2008 Cactus Bowl and the 2008 Texas vs. Nation Game. He missed both due to injury.

The Northeast-10 Hall of Fame Class of 2016 includes three student-athletes (Bernadeau; Joelle Martin, Merrimack Women's Basketball; Chris Madigan, Saint Anselm Men's Basketball), three former coaches (Hoffman; Archie Boulet, Bryant Golf; John Ippolito, Assumption Men's Tennis) and three national championship teams (2006-07 Southern Connecticut women's basketball, 2007 Le Moyne men's lacrosse, 2007 Franklin Pierce men's soccer).

Hoffman and Bernadeau will both be recognized at an on-campus event this coming fall.
