24-Point 1st Half Powers Bentley to 38-7 Win over Southern Connecticut St.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Jeff Hill (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield HS) caught two of grad student Danny Guadagnoli's (Framingham, Mass./Framingham HS) four TD passes in the first half  as both achieved milestones while leading Bentley University to a long-awaited 38-7 win over Southern Connecticut State in Northeast-10 Conference football Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.

Hill finished with seven catches for 141 yards while becoming the sixth player in program history to reach the 200 career-point plateau. He also became the third Falcon to amass over 3,000 career receiving yards and the fifth to achieve 3,000 all-purpose yards.

Guadagnoli moved past Ted Larkin and Bryant Johnson into second in program history in total offense, finishing the game with 8.401. He threw for 257 yards in the first half alone en route to 348 overall on 23 of 39.

Senior Jet Kollie (Lowell, Mass./Lowell HS) and sophomore defensive end Paul Norris (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro HS) were also instrumental  in the victory. Kollie had 229 all-purpose yards, including five punt returns for 142 yards, while Norris finished with eight tackles, including four for losses and three sacks, resulting in losses of 24 yards.

After a three-and-out that led to a 40-yard Kollie punt return, Bentley wasted little time in quieting the Southern Homecoming Day crowd. The Falcons took possession at the Owl 33 and achieved three first downs before Guadagnoli and Hill teamed up on a seven-yard scoring strike.

Following another defensive denial by Bentley, a 54-yard, eight-play drive was finished by a 32-yard field goal off the foot of junior Michael Baron (Medfield, Mass./Roxbury Latin School). That made it a 10-0 Falcon advantage with 3:52 still left on the first-quarter clock. Baron totaled eight points on the day as he remained perfect on PATs this year (23-23), making five against the Owls.

Southern's only scoring of the day came on the opening play of the second quarter, a 31-yard pass from freshman Ray Catalano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) to classmate Shaquan Hall (Newark, N.J).

By halftime, following two more Guadagnoli scoring passes, Bentley had opened the game up, taking a 24-7 lead into the break. A three-yard TD pass to sophomore Sean Myers (Foxboro, Mass./ Roxbury Latin School) finished an 82-yard drive that featured a 50-yard reception by Kollie.

A little more than five minutes later, with 2:34 left on the clock, he used a free play (Southern was offsides) to go deep to Hill. That produced a 70-yard scoring strike and a 17-point advantage.

The only scoring of the third quarter was a 15-yard pass from Guadagnoli to senior Matt Guay (North Attleboro, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS), the play after Kollie returned a punt 74 yards, just three yards shy of the longest in program history.

The scoring was completed early in the fourth when Martin Bannerman (Pawtucket, R.I./La Salle Academy) took it in from the two after a 28-yard pass to junior Chris Walsh (Attleboro, Mass./ Attleboro HS), a Southern personal foul penalty and a pass interference in the end zone. The Owls (1-6, 1-5 NE-10) were flagged 12 times for 91 yards while Bentley was called for just two penalties (15 yards).

The strong Bentley defensive effort included nine sacks, the most for the Falcons since having ten at Saint Anselm in 2002, and an interception from sophomore Sam McDonald (Norfolk, Mass./ King Philip Reg. HS). It was his fourth of the year and seventh in 17 career games.

Senior linebacker Kyle Young (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial HS) and freshman defensive lineman Luke Morrison (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro HS) both had two sacks for 12 yards, and senior linebacker Blaine Hopwood (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford HS) shared the team-lead in tackles with Norris.

Bentley outgained the Owls by 100 yards, 388-288, and finished with an 18-16 edge in first downs. That differential was more pronounced after three quarters when it stood at 15-9.

Bentley, 2-5 overall and 1-5 NE-10, will close out its home schedule next Saturday with Pace University the Senior Day opponent.
