WALTHAM – As new Bentley University head football coach Bill Kavanaugh surveyed the Northeast-10 Conference upon his return to his alma mater last winter he was struck with one thing about the level of competition.

"In watching film," he said in between workouts at a recent double-session practice at the team's stadium, "the league is a heck of a lot better than it was when I left from top to bottom. That's good for the league.

"We've got to make sure we're on top of that."

Kavanaugh got another sense of just how the league has improved since his graduation in 2004 - after a stellar career on the defensive line - when the preseason NE-10 was recently released and the perennial league title contenders were picked eighth out of the 10 schools.
