Guadagnoli, Hill Team Up on Last Minute Bomb, Giving Bentley 21-14 Come-From-Behind Win

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior quarterback Danny Guadagnoli (Framingham/Framingham HS) threw a pair of TD passes in the first six minutes of the second half and paired with sophomore Jeff Hill (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) on a game-winning 70-yard bomb with 51 seconds left to give undefeated Bentley University a come-from-behind 21-14 win over Assumption College Friday night in Northeast-10 Conference football at the Multi-Sport Stadium.

Bentley, which overcame a double-digit deficit for the second straight week, improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the NE-10 while extending its winning streak to five games. Assumption, with its second last minute loss of the season, dipped to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Guadagnoli finished 22 of 28 for a career-high 344 yards, including 260 in the second half, and now has eight TD passes on the season. Hill's game-winner was his eighth catch of the night, for 146 yards, and his ninth career TD reception, all of which have been for 33 yards or more.

After both teams forced a punt in the final three minutes, Bentley took possession of the ball at its own seven with 1:50 left. Guadagnoli completed four consecutive short passes, to Hill, senior Sean Cross (Duxbury/Duxbury HS), senior Bill Kiley (Quincy/Boston College HS) and Kiley again, moving the ball out to the 30.

On the next play, Hill sprinted down the right sideline and Guadagnoli hit him in stride at about the Hound 25. He took it into the end zone untouched, and senior Will Lockwood (Menlo Park, Calif./ Sacred Heart Prep) tacked on the extra point for the seven-point lead.

Any hopes Assumption had of a comeback were dashed when fifth-year senior safety Don Hopkins (Waltham/Waltham HS) came up with a game-clinching interception with 21 seconds left.

The first half was all Assumption as the Hounds amassed 42 plays and 200 yards while controlling the ball for over 20 minutes and scoring two unanswered touchdowns for a 14-0 lead. Bentley was limited to just 19 plays, five coming in the final minute, and only 77 yards total offense, including minus-seven net rushing.

Assumption opened the game with a 10-play, 58-yard drive that ate up more than six minutes and was capped by an eight-yard run by junior tailback Matt Pedone (Holden). At one point, the Hounds lined up to punt, but after an offsides flag, they went for it on a fourth and two. Matt Tuleja (Mansfield) picked up four on the play, resulting in a first down on the Bentley 35.

The only scoring in the second quarter was another lengthy Assumption drive, this one again taking more than six minutes. The 14th-play on the 69-yard drive was a 15-yard scoring strike from junior Bobby Jordan (Cromwell, Conn.) to junior tight end Scott Simonson (Red Bank, N.J.).

All the momentum that Assumption had disappeared in the first six minutes of the second half when Guadagnoli threw TD passes of 35 yards to senior tight end Jon Wilkie (Groton/Lawrence Academy) and 48 yards to Kiley.

The TD pass to Wilkie capped a seven-play, 73-yard drive to start the second half, and three plays after a three-and-out, Guadagnoli went deep to Kiley for the tying touchdown. Kiley also topped 100 yards in receiving, finishing with 113 yards on six receptions.

Jordan finished with 227 passing yards on 24 of 41, but was only nine of 21 for 91 yards in the second half. Simonson led the Greyhounds in receiving, with seven for 98 yards.

Bentley, despite the first-half woes, finished with a 366-323 advantage in total offense. Assumption had one more first down (19-18), but hurt itself with 86 yards in penalties.

Senior defensive end Matt Campo (Dedham/Catholic Memorial HS) and junior linebacker Blaine Hopwood (New Bedford/New Bedford HS) each had seven tackles for the Falcons.

Bentley has a bye next weekend and returns to action Sept. 28 with a home Friday night game against Stonehill College.
