4 Bentley Players Named to Academic All-Northeast-10 Football Team

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Four Bentley University seniors, including center Jared Kawadler (Sharon/Xaverian Bros. HS) and wide receiver John Malone (Walpole/Walpole HS), have been named to the 2010 Academic All-Northeast-10 Conference football team.

This marks the second straight year that Bentley has placed a conference-high four players on the team, with Kawadler and Malone joined by quarterback Bryant Johnson (Hopedale/Milford HS) and linebacker Greg O'Brien (Canton/Xaverian Bros. HS). All four were team captains for the Falcons this past season.

Kawadler and Malone were both selected for the third consecutive year, and Johnson is a repeat selection. O'Brien is making his inaugural appearance on the All-Academic team.

Kawadler, a three-year starter in the middle of the offensive line, earned first-team ESPN Academic All-America honors and was a second-team All-Conference honoree. Last year, he received the conference's Sport Excellence Award for football, as the conference's top scholar-athlete. Kawadler has excelled in the classroom throughout his time at Bentley, amassing a 3.88 grade point average while majoring in economics-finance with a minor

Malone was second on the team in receiving during the 2009 season with 43 catches for 509 yards and five touchdowns. He caught at least three balls in every game and had seven receptions for 135 yards and two scores in the season-opener at Carson-Newman. Malone, who finished his career with 104 catches for 1195 yards, owns a 3.55 GPA as an economics-finance major.

Johnson was the 2010 Northeast-10 MVP following a terrific season in which he directed the Falcons to a season-ending four-game winning streak, a 5-4 overall record and a share of first place in the NE-10. His conference-best completion percentage of .659 was a school record, and he accounted for 23 touchdowns, throwing for 18 and running for five. Johnson, who plans to return next fall for his final season of eligibility, has a 3.41 GPA as an accountancy major.

O'Brien earned second-team All-Northeast-10 honors this past season after leading the Falcons in tackles with 80. Included were three games in which he reached double-figures, with a high of 15 at Carson-Newman. O'Brien, who majors in both accountancy and liberal studies, has earned a 3.42 GPA.
